Humanist Walk to Crystal Palace Park and the Horniman Museum

Meet at 12pm at the 'Brown and Green' café outside the exit barriers at Crystal Palace Station on the Overground. Finish at Forest Hill Station (Overground). Crystal Palace is, for example, a 29 minute journey from Whitechapel, but the train can be picked up from Shadwell or Canada Water too. The Southern Line also goes here (20 mins). This beautiful but hilly walk is suitable for wheelchairs and should keep the ‘pusher’ fit. It is 3-4 miles long.

We’ll start by visiting the Dinosaur Trail around the lake gardens before going up to see what’s left of the Crystal Palace itself, the hill here giving excellent views over the city. We’ll then head to Sydenham Hill Wood before finishing with a visit to the Horniman Museum (free entry), which is an attractive building in the Arts and Cafts style of the late 19th century. This is a major museum and the principle collections here are World Cultures, Musical Instruments and Natural History. There is a fee to see the aquariums (c£3.30). Otherwise a special highlight is the stuffed Walrus, apparently. Forest Hill Station is then a short walk from the museum.
Our walks are planned for exploration and friendly socialising whilst giving us all a bit of exercise too. As usual we’ll invite voluntary donations of £2 for CLHG.
