Central London Humanist Group Social and Food Drive for the Homeless

Every first Wednesday of the month we meet for a social evening at a central London pub. Please drop by if you're non-religious and you would like to meet like-minded people in a relaxed atmosphere.

If you're just questioning your beliefs and aren't sure where to turn, or you are non-religious and looking for an interesting evening of debate and good company, this could be just right for you.

Some people arrive at 6.00 p.m. straight after work, but there is no specific time to be there and people arrive throughout the evening. Quite often a group of us are still engaged in debate at closing time.

A voluntary donation of £2 suggested - but first timers are welcome to give us a free trial.

You'll find us on tables with signs saying reserved for humanists, normally about 40 people turn up so we are pretty easy to find, and a very friendly group, so please come along and meet us. We look forward to seeing you there.

We are also making our Food (& Toiletries) Drive for the Homeless, a regular occurrence every other month at the same venue. The collection is for ‘Shelter from the Storm’ homeless shelter in the Kings Cross area. See the list below for items they need. People can drop their donations in to the Coffee House and a group of us will take them to the shelter later in the evening some time after 7.30. If you’re interested in getting involved with them as a volunteer they can be contacted via the web site. They have a Facebook page if you’d like to get a bit more of a feel for them, which also has fundraising events on it sometimes.

If you’re interested in getting involved with a centre more local to you instead and are not sure what to expect or how to go about it, have a chat with Jan who helps out in her north London area, or let us put you in touch. Also if you know of other shelters in London that would appreciate humanist voluntary help let us know.

Suggested items to bring:

• Tinned veg • Tinned meat • Sugar • White Rice • White Pasta • Cereals • Tea • Coffee • Biscuits • Chocolate bars • Cakes • Long-life milk • Fruit juices • Squash • Cooking oil

• Soap • Shower gel • Shampoo • Conditioner • Deodorant • Tooth paste and brushes • Safety razors • Sanitary towels

Good to get across from the Royal Institution event in time to meet up with a few of you later yesterday evening. Since it was a topic of conversation, I thought I'd share my report on Karen Armstrong's talk.

Hi Helen, I can't make it now and I can't change my RSVP - sorry! I'm not feeling well enough to travel. I'm gutted to miss you all and fingers crossed, see you next month for apostate chats.

Mina. I'll be along a bit later this evening, so don't leave too early so that I can say goodbye to you. Hope all goes well for you in Oz.

This will probably be my last meetup with the group as I'm emigrating to the land down under in few weeks' time. Hope to see as many of you as possible tonight!

Love to be there, so enjoyed my first one, but I have tickets to see Karen Armstrong on religions and war that evening.
