Jam Session #1

Come along to our first regular jam session open to all Jammers.

We'll split the cost of studio hire on the day of the session.

Feel free to comment with some suggestions for warm-up songs that we can easily download the lyrics/TAB for.

Once we've warmed up we'll go for it and try and create some new music together. If you'd like to bring along you're own music that you would like us to play then bring print-outs of lyrics/chords/TABS etc. If you do, be prepared for Jammers to have fun and do their own thing with it. We don't really want any musical dictators turning up and bossing us around, we probably all get enough bossing around at work.

To help get the most out the jam session please read through the information on the following pages before the jam:

Please also check the session comments for further details about what's happening.

Looking forward to this first jam session!

A very good session and some good musicians. Thanks Alex for organizing and leading it. For the future I would suggest that we also try some instrumentals.

Thanks everyone for coming tonight and really putting a lot if effort in to making some good music. Particular thanks to Colin and Nav for bringing song sheets.

It was great fun writing the song in the last hour with you all. Nav and Colin's vocal melodies were great, it took some balls to do that for us all.

Lookin forward to our next session!

Alex, could you please confirm where the studio is? I thought it was on Denmark Street, but the address says: Denmark Place and the map points to Bow Church? Thanks.

The studio is called 'Enterprise Studios'

    Hey Fellow-Jammers,

    Hi everyone!

It's not long till our first jam now :-)

Just a reminder, for warm up songs we will be having a go at Nav's suggestions that include:

    - A Hard Day's Night
    - Hey Jude
    - I want to hold your hand
    - California Dreaming: Mamas and The Papas
    - Imagine: J.Lennon

Nav is bringing printouts with lyrics and chords for us all. Nav may bring some printouts of other songs too.

Basically we'll start by jamming with Nav's tracks and then have a go at writing some stuff together.

If you have RSVP'd yes to this jam and can no longer attend, please RSVP no so that someone on the waitlist can take your place.

Remember, if you RSVP yes you are committing to paying your share of the studio fees. Please don't let us down.

My number is[masked], please give me a call/text if you're running late or having any other problems.

    Thanks,
    Alex

I have them in a songbook which I am carrying with me. Will try to transpose them to the computer/ipad if I find time in the next day.

Great stuff, thanks Nav. Don't forget to check online with 911 TABS or a similar site. Someone may have done the job for you already :)

Guitarists - I recommend bringing Capos and Straps. Also, can someone pick me one Strap? I wasn't expecting to be out of town so dont have mine with me. Thanks.

Hi Alex, Have you had any cancellations? I'm a guitarist but also do vocals. Happy to come along and sing if there's room and you want to make it less instrumental.

Hi Matty, great to here from you. No cancellations yet and RSVPs are now closed. Best thing is to sign up to sing at the next jam if you are free? I think we have got enough guitarists for session #2 now. Cheers, Alex

All sounds good. Could someone please clarify if I need to hire drums prior to the session? I noticed Michele is not attending, so will it be me and Kelvin sharing drum duties? If so, do we need to arrange anything?

Hi Kelvin, thanks for that. As this is the first time I have ever been involved in anything like this, I don't know the right protocol to avoid treading on anyone's toes/doing the right thing. So do one of us need to call prior to hire the kit and is that cost shared? And are you willing to share the cymbals and hi-hat? I understand if you don't.

      January 21, 2014

    • Alex H.

Thanks for being well prepared guys. I think all you need are cymbals but you could always call the studio to check.

Hi Michele and Kelvin, just checking the situation with the drums - I noticed Michele that you said about bringing cymbals and kick drum pedal, is that still the case? I don't own any kit at all anymore, only sticks. And are us three going to take it in turns with the jam? I'm easy :)

Hi Alex, at the moment am on the waiting list... any chance that I can come and watch for the first time? Is the studio big enough for a small audience? :-) .. also any indication of what you will be playing?

    January 18, 2014

    • Alex H.

Hi Martino, its good to hear from you. Unfortunately the sessions will be for participating jammers only. If and when we do an open pub session people will be more than welcome to come and watch. The best thing is to just attend as a participant, looking forward to seeing you in action soon hopefully! :-)

Hi! I'm new to the group, I can't wait forward to see you on 23rd!

    January 5, 2014

    • Michele M.

Ok! Let me know for next jam! I'm waiting anxious! :-) see you!

      January 6, 2014

    • Alex H.

LOL will do mate! Maybe go for a run or something... ;-)

      January 6, 2014

  • Michele M.

I have some instrument here from Italy, three cymbals, one Kick pedal, one snare with stand and one cymbal stand. Let me know how many drummer are coming, what I can bring, or what do you need. I can bring all my stuff anyway! Thanks, see you!

    January 5, 2014

  • Alex H.

So we've got a lot of guitarists at this session!

Please could you guys let me know who can bring amps?

I'm not sure we will get an amp each from the studio.

    December 31, 2013

    • Alex H.

Just checked and the studio just needs a deposit for the pedal so no extra cost there :-)

      January 1, 2014

    • Alex H.

Good news guys! I've secured 4 guitar amps for the session. The first amp is 'free' and the others are an extra £2 each. I suggest we split the extra £6 between the guitarists. If you can bring you're own amp then that negates the charge.

Is there any piano or keyboard available in the room at the studio? "Gear and other stuff" doesn't mention any. Thanks

    December 30, 2013

    • francesco

I doubt it. I do not have a keyboard. I use an upright piano, which cannot be carried around.

      January 1, 2014

    • Alex H.

I'm sure we can find one that supplies a keyboard mate. I'm new to the area so am on an exploratory mission with regards to rehearsal rooms. We can try a different place next time.

  • Alex H.

    Hi everyone!

I'm so pleased that we have already nearly filled the session. And with two drummers, that's a surprise!

We don't have a bassist yet but I'm happy to borrow one and play bass.

At the moment, only Colin has said that he sings. And it sounds like he doesn't normally sing much. We can have a very instrumental session so that's not a massive concern.

However, I will need to give priority to a singer or bassist joining the group. I hope this won't happen but I may need to ask someone to not attend this session so that they can come along.

I think last-in / first-out is the fairest way to do this.

There is still one spot left for the jam and hopefully a singer will join us.

Colin, if you're happy to sing more than I think you are please let us know.

    Cheers,
    Alex

Great. I will bring print outs, will bring more similar songs so we have a choice.

      Great, thanks Nav

  • Alex H.

Steve and Kelvin, are you guys happy to take it in turns to play drums?

    Maybe share cymbals and stands?

Or will one of you bring you're own full kit along for insane double drummer action?!

    December 31, 2013

      A former member

Yes that's fine. I was going to post to say that I don't have a kit anyway, I only have sticks. I wasn't sure if the rehearsal space would have a kit, so if not this may be a problem!

      December 31, 2013

    • Alex H.

Hi Steve, we will be fine. The studio provide a kit inclusive in our hire fee. Cymbals and pedals can be hired. Hopefully Kelvin will let us know what he can bring.

  • Tone

Been known to unleashed my voice on remote occasions - thing is I'm only ever 'alone' when this happens. (poor memory for lyrics but gutsy and impulsive when inspired)

    December 31, 2013

    • Alex H.

      Hi Tone,

Glad to have you on board and filling the lineup for our first session.

Sounds like its time to unleash that voice of yours! No need to memorize any lyrics for our sessions, just bring along printouts with chords and lyrics to refer to.

Hopefully you'll be able to sing along with Nav this time!
