Down in the Ditch evening walk

Down in the Ditch evening walk
Tuesday 3 December

On Tuesday evenings I am leading a series of walks exploring the East End based on Alan Gilbey's Back Passages book

The last one will be on Tuesday evening 3 December from Shoreditch High Street to Hoxton. Beyond Brick Lane lies London’s first Theatreland, its earliest council estate and its silliest haircut. Mixing old & new like an overpriced cocktail we’ll discover Little Hanoi and A Child of the Jago

Meet 6.30pm outside Shoreditch High Street Station. This is 10 minutes walk or a short bus ride from Liverpool St station

There will be lots of stories:
* Braithwaite Viaduct & Bishopsgate Goods Depot
* A knotty thing – East London’s ropiest statue
* Club Row Market & the Pet Shop Boys
* Rachel Whiteread’s studio & Avant Garde luxury flats
* Les Trois Garcons & Gina’s Cafe
* Rich Mix – kinetic sculpture
* Site of the Old Nichol & the Boundary Estate
* Arnold Circus – the Boundary bandstand
* Ship & Ball pub – where the Great Train Robbery was planned
* St Leonards Church – when I grow rich say the bells of Shoreditch
* Historic tea stall
* Comedy Café & the site of The Theatre
* Village Underground & tube trains in the sky
* Hoxton Square – White Cube and the Hoxton Fin haircut
* Little Hanoi
* Geffrye Museum

The walk ends at Hoxton station on the Overground

Afterwards you have the option of joining me for a Vietnamese meal. For the walk only, you can just turn up but if you’d like to go on to the restaurant, please let me know so I can book enough places

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
