First Annual Frontier BBQ Run

Welcome to the first annual Frontier Barbeque Run in scenic Fairfield Pennsylvania! Don’t be afraid we will only set foot a few miles into PA, this is in the shadow of Camp David / Site R, some of the best protected real estate in the free world, and some of the best barbeque! We will depart from Pinecliff Park (Crack Pie starting point just off I-70) 8350 Pinecliff Park Rd, Frederick, MD 21704 promptly at 10am. We will wind through the back roads of Frederick County up across the border to Fairfield Pa. There we will stop for a leisurely lunch at Frontier Barbeque, 801 Waynesboro Pike, Fairfield, PA 17320.

About 1pm, we will head back toward Frederick County toward Nutter’s Ice Cream in Sharpsburg, 100 S. Mechanic Street, Sharpsburg, MD 21782 for desert. (Anyone not wishing to continue on for ice cream will be given directions to Route 15 which connects up with I-70 to Baltimore and I-270 to the DC Beltway)

After everyone has had their fill of ice cream we will head down along the C&O canal (on the road, not on the tow path or IN the canal) and wind our way back to Frederick and Pinecliff Park. This will be almost a full day concluding at about 4pm.

Is there a pdf of the route for this run somewhere? The day is so perfect, I might have to go tear up some roads this afternoon.

Had a great time, everyone! Thank you to the organizers! I cut together a little music video with handheld footage I caught, and posted it on my Facebook page. If you see your car in the video feel free to tag yourself: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10200638834721286&set=vb.1472734001&type=2&theater

I nominate Jason as our official videographer!! LOVE that song and your editing was great! Thanks for capturing the thrills.

I'd be so much fun to do a more planned production; co-pilot with some one and shoot video....but I can't NOT drive on a run, lol!

      August 26, 2013

    • erica

Get one of those thingys you attach to the car.

Big thank you to everyone's patience and safe driving out there, I hope my radio instructions were clear and concise trying to keep everyone together and motoring forward. Beyond the camper of doom, and some rocks in the road all went very well. Enjoy your full belly and grab some rest and being on our 7 hour run.

Jason, you memoralized our First BBQ Run in an amazing manner. Thank you so much for going beyond...the music selection was a perfect fit!!!

Wow Jason, nice work! Were we really going that fast?

    1 · August 26, 2013

    • Jason

Well....yes and no. All the footage was sped up a bit to address "perceptual lens correction"; camera lenses are wider than human eye and give the impression you're going slower than you actually are when shooting from a moving car. Then some it I sped up even more for effect :)

      August 26, 2013

Jason that was very cool! Well done!! Thanks for sharing! ☺

Thanks for everyone who turned out today, it was a lot of planning and practice from what began as an idea over a pork sandwich six months ago, I was happy it turned out so well and everyone enjoyed it. Thanks for the excellent driving, and keeping the group together during our longest and most challenging runs. Special thanks to James for his original BBQ idea and Rab/Tom for sweeping today!

    All,
I just completed the test run, and have deleted some "marginal roads", not to say this will not be a challenging run. There is a good mix of slow winding roads and some higher speed country roads. Some of these roads are so challenging we may actually have to travel below the speed limit-if you can imagine that. We will advise the group of what is coming up by radio as we go so everyone can stay safe. There are three legs" 1) From Pinecliff to Frontier BBQ-about 2 hrs, 2) From Frontier BBQ to Nutters Ice Cream-about an hour and 3) Nutters Ice Cream Back to Pinecliff Park-about an hour and a half. Everyone can stay with the group as long as they wish, both Frontier and Nutters are not too off major highways if anyone needs to leave the group. I expect we should finish up around 4pm or so. I will bring route sheets for everyone Sunday.

    Things to bring:
Full tank of gas (we will be travelling about 150 miles)
    Radios (if you have them)
Cash - Both places have are cash only

  • Neci W.

So what if you don't have a radio?

    August 24, 2013

    • Obsessive

You can go out today to Walmart, Best Buy or Target and pick one up-they are pretty cheap or you can always borrow one of our spares - but it might cost you a rib or lick of your cone!

      1 · August 24, 2013

    • Nikki

Someone always brings a spare especially for a rib or two. ;-)

      August 24, 2013

  • Ben B.

We are going to be in the area and would love to join the group, but we are a little concern because we will be travelling with our two Jack Russells. Any recommendations?

    August 21, 2013

    • James

You would probably want to contact both Frontier and Nutters for their pet policies, beyond that I hope they are secured down tight to your seats.

      August 23, 2013

    • Obsessive

I took Cooper to Frontier and Nutters today, Frontier was no problem but you may not take dogs into Nutters, they need to wait outside but most people hang out outside while eating ice cream so no problem.

For those attending please review the menu and let us know what you would like to get, if everyone wants the same thing then I just need to notify them ahead of time to be prepped for large quantities of X. I HIGHLY recommend their ribs, but have done their pit sandwiches too and they are very good as well. I have been in contact with the owner and all items will be available on the summer menu
