No front tag required in Maryland

Just found this out today when I was at MOBC. House Bill 577 states that effective 10-1-2013 any car mfg. without means to display front plate will not be required to do such. The front plate will be needed to be kept inside the car but not displayed. Now if your car has the tag backing plate already on it you might be sol. Call Patrick at the parts dept at MOBC for further info. He gave me a copy of the bill to keep in my car. This is good news to me since I have not been running a front plate since new.

So, from now on, we buy our cars in Pennsylvania?

No, just tell the dealer to not put the backing plate on when you buy your car like I did.

Thanks for the heads-up on this!! I wouldn't have known to look this up if not for this post.

Difficult to fight a ticket when most MINIs, and for me, Miatas, obviously have front plates.

There have been petitions circulating in Maryland for a few years to remove the requirement for a front plate. Nice to see it finally passed. Here's a link to the bill so you can print and carry with. As Rab noted, you WILL have to carry the tag in the car though.

House bills 562 (State issuance of single plate) and 577 (no front plate requirement on autos with no front mount manufactured onto vehicle) did not pass out of the legislature committee as of May 2013, initial review of said bills begun in February 2013. Continuance of two plates in Maryland is still in effect with no change occurring on Oct 1st 2013 as to when 577 would have been set to take effect.

Which was impressed upon me by a very nice Montgomery County Officer who had been told to step up enforcement since this rumor has been spread about. We had a nice chat about it, no ticket just told me to get the plate mounted ASAP. Which I will now.
