  • Jun 30, 2013 · 11:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is the prison where The Shawshank Redemption was filmed....

- $9 per person to take a self-guided tour of the entire prison. It took me 3 hours to go all the way through, including time spent taking photos.

- You will be able to take photos of the cell blocks, individual cells, and solitary confinement

Somewhat gruesome, eh? Worked for the prison system for 28+ years, and visited all of the facilities, active and inactive. Too bad you guys didn't see the old Lima facility, turrets, winding staircases, and all.

My first event with this group - I thought it was a GREAT place to shoot! Was a great day for it.

This was a REALLY neat shoot! I got some AMAZING photos. I wish I'd gotten to meet more of you, but I'm sure I will be attending more events. Thanks for arranging this one, I really enjoyed it!

I unfortunately won't be making it. My break light came on yesterday and I don't think I want to take the chance of driving 75 minutes away.

  • Mike P.

I may be coming but there is a good chance I may miss it.

    can't make this one

  • Rebecca S

what lens(es) would you recommend bringing?

    June 26, 2013

    • Bob from D.

Sumant is right, the faster the lens the easier to get good shots indoors. Lenses with vibration control also help in low light. I think a wide angle lens might be useful at the reformatory. Because tripods aren't allowed, keeping the camera stationary while shooting will require you to lean on walls set your camera down.

This will be my first event, and looking forward to it. I'm gonna go up and stay Sat. with a friend who lives up that way. She probably won't be able to come, but if she wants to, could she, even if she isn't a member of the group? This is a tour that's open to the public, right? Just wanted to check before I ask her.

    June 28, 2013

    • Kevin W.

Absolutely! We rarely do things with an attendance limit, so feel free to bring your friend. Looking forward to meeting you.

This is my first event, do we just meet there? Will there be anything planned for afterwards?

    June 28, 2013

    • Mark D.

Sorry, just saw the "where to meet section. My bad. Newbie mistake." See you all there.

      June 28, 2013

  • Bob from D.

I have a Mansfield / Richland County visitors guide if someone wants to pick it up before they go, but you can access <mobile.mansfieldtourism.com> for the on-line version.

Note that the" Ohio Bird Sanctuary" is in Mansfield. They have live raptors and a walk through aviary. Not sure of the hours or if you'd have time for both activities in one day.

    June 28, 2013

  • Charles A.

So, is it $150 or $9 for the visit?

    June 12, 2013

    • Kevin W.

$9 for the visit, and you may bring your camera and lenses. I saw many people with bags or backpacks.... if you show up with a tripod and a boatload of gear, they might charge you $150. That's the clearest guidance I could get from them, so I posted their email verbatim. Sorry if I made it confusing...

They say that Speedlights are OK on your camera.

      June 25, 2013

"Cameras are welcome on all tours of the Reformatory, however tripods, bipods, monopods and professional camera equipment are not permitted on weekday or Sunday tours."

If this event was for a Saturday... a tripod or similar equipment would be allowed on any tour.

There are different tours available. A Photo Tour is by appointment only and is $150 for 4 hours. A Self-Guided Tour which is what you will be paying for is only $9.

Let's not get carried away again... lighting accessories are bringing in stands or big reflectors etc., not a flash that is mounted on your camera or even one that has a remote where someone else is holding it for you. ;)

If anyone would be interested in meeting at the Menards in Marion and carpooling the rest of the way, let me know. I can easily fit 3 more people + equipment. I've went up there for the haunted house last year and its an amazing place.

    June 12, 2013

  • Josh

Sorry, I just looked at the map. Marion might not be worth anyone's time. I could meet at the Meijers in Delaware instead.
