COUNT Discussion Meeting: Topic - "9 Questions You shouldn't ask Atheists"

COUNT focuses on volunteering and outreach. The projects that we take on are those that help the world around us and positively affect the lives and reputations of atheists and other non believers.

Every week we will meet to review those upcoming projects and then spend some time discussing a weekly topic that will help develop and support the local atheist/non-theist community, discuss secular viewpoints, encourage a positive atheist/non-theist culture, and provide opportunities for socializing and friendship.

Greta Christina recently published an article on alternet.org titled “9 Questions You shouldn’t ask Atheists”. For our discussion this week, we will be reviewing those questions – which I listed below.

  • How can you be moral without believing in God?
  • How do you have any meaning in your life? Sometimes asked as, “Don’t you feel sad or hopeless?” or even, “If you don’t believe in God or Heaven, why don’t you just kill yourself?”
  • Doesn’t it take just as much/even more faith to be an atheist as it does to be a believer?
  • Isn’t atheism just another religion?
  • What’s the point of atheist groups? How can you have a community and a movement for something you don’t believe in?
  • “Why do you hate God?” Or, “Aren’t you just angry at God?”
  • But have you (read the Bible or some other holy book, heard about some supposed miracle, heard my story about my personal religious experience?
  • “What if you’re wrong?” Sometimes asked as, “Doesn’t it make logical sense to believe in God? If you believe and you’re wrong, nothing terrible happens, but if you don’t believe and you’re wrong, you could go to Hell!”
  • Why are you atheists so angry?

After our talk on the discussion topic, we would love to spend time hanging out, having a few drinks, and getting to know one another.

Atheist, agnostics, other non-theists, and atheist-friendly people are welcome to join us.

Since I am having surgery on July 9, I want to postpone being a discussion group leader. Very frustrating!
