Forging a frontier knife

A good knife is one of those essentials to out door survival. Many a frontier story revolve around this life saving tool. I couldn't help but notice at our first meetup, we need to tool up. So I'm offering an opportunity for those who plan on sharing in our out door adventures, to hand forge their own frontier knife. I have uploaded pictures of some knives I've hammered out, in our photo album.  If you would like to share in this, find a hefty old file and bring a lunch. The file should be proportionate to the size of knife you want to make. If you have a suitable antler for a handle, bring it. If not I will have some on hand. Some will be free others $5 to $10. My tipi will be up and when we're done with knives we can pow wow over up coming events.

We had a great time. Jason you're going to kick yourself for being sick when you see the knives Devin and Cindy made. Devin and I are going to finish the knives tomorrow, then we'll post the pictures.

Since the others are going to be late don't worry about being on time. It takes 30 minutes from Bend. I have plenty of material, no cost. I'll have coffee pot going, just bring a lunch.

I live in Bend and am planning on giving myself 45 minutes to get there and find your place. Does that sound about right? I'll have to buy supplies from you I think.

Wow that's too bad. Let's you and I try to get together, since you live in Sisters, and we'll build you a knife. I'll email my number to you and we can work something out. I still have a friend and his son coming over around noon to forge, so there are still 4 of us. They haven't figgerd out how rsvp works.

    Hey guys,
sorry to be a wet blanket. I have been sick this week and do not want to 'share'. I am getting better but think it best to miss this one. Happy fourth of july.

As time permits we will hammer out some steels for flint and steel sets. Our next meetup after knife forging will be making fire with bowdrill, handspindle and flint steel.

Yes, bring a file if you can find one and a lunch. I'll get together with your Dad on the antlers. I think I'll have plenty of material. Look forward to having you two over.

I scored a box of files. If you are having trouble finding old files, check the second hand stores. Bring what you can, but I should have plenty of material on hand.
