Let's head out to Yosemite to catch the Waterfalls

We would head out from Oakdale and Caravan or you can meet us there. Starting at Bridal Veil Falls and then to Yosemite Falls. Lot's of great places in the valley and we can shoot around the storage barns on the Foresta Rd.

Leave at 6am and you can come back whenever you are ready to.

    It's going to be snowing.

Well, I've got a bit of bad news... it looks like it's going to be snowing in Yosemite on Wednesday and the odds are the hwy 120 entrance may not even be open. Based on that I'm afraid that we're going to have to postpone this shoot.

There's a small chance that the following week will work but at this time I just don't know. Any of you that would like to go anyway please don't let me ruin your day but I'm just not interested in taking the chance.

If this changes I'll let you know.

Do you need to be carrying chains in the car if driving? I would love to go, but do not have chains and heard that there is a stiff fine if stopped and do not have them..

Hi! New to the group and was wondering if you will be offering another basic intro class?

Wish i could make it that Wednesday. I'm flying out to Vegas the following day (21st) so can't take off from work the beginning of that week. If you guys plan something out in the spring, let me know. I would love to take photos of the waterfalls at their strongest season.

I love to avoid the crowds but the way my schedule is right now I can't make it on a Tues., Wed., or Thurs. until after May 3rd. Disappointing for me.

Sounds good to me. I would love to hitch a ride as I don't trust my driving skills on snow or ice.

Well, it looks as if we have a pretty wide range of interest in this event. In all my trips to Yosemite I've found that the best day is either Tuesday or Wednesday. The weekenders leave on Monday and they start coming back in on Thursday and Friday. I suggest that we head up on Wednesday the 20th. I'd like to move the time up to leaving at 6am and staying through to sunset. I've done that before and Jack is right, sometimes you can catch some nice shots of the mist rising above the water. We don't necessairly need to travel as a group but sometimes that can be fun. I will have room for one or two in my vehicle if someone needs a ride. Thoughts anyone?

I can't make it any weekend in February, but from March onward I have availability. Keep me posted if its not in February. Thanks.

I have heard of the event, but I could not make it, as I have a state soccer tournament to help run that weekend. Sounds like a nice event though.

By the end of this month, roughly around the last couple of weeks, there's an annual natural event called "Fire Waterfall". It happens on El Capitan and is is created by the reflection of the sunlight (at sunset) on the waterfall. I have seen photos and it's spectacular to say the least.

Since I only have weekends off, I would like to go on Saturday Feb 23rd, depending also on the weather. It's been nice the past few days, but we're still in Winter and who knows how the weather it's going to be in 3 weeks.

For more info on that and some beautiful pictures, go to:

    What do you guys think?

You may be able to do this as a day trip. If you want to spend the night though, it's too late. Everything in the valley, and near it, is booked solid for those 2 weeks (I've looked) The waterfall that is commonly photographed and called the 'firefall' is Horsetail Falls, which is near El Capitan, but not on it. I've been in the valley during this time of year and discovered that Horsetail Falls isn't the only thing that turns orange-red. I have photos of halfdome that are orange. The entire valley turns color.

For full waterfalls, I'd suggest going in mid-to-late April. Also, you should start at the far end of the valley and follow the sun back to the entrance. Yosemite falls is best at the break of dawn when the ice is calving off the cliff face. Then head to Mirror Lake for the reflections. By then it's lunch time. The light on Horsetail falls, swinging bridge and El Capitan is best in early afternoon. Bridalveil Falls is back-lit in the morning. BUT, in the afternoon (4pm-ish) the sun hits the spray off of Bridalveil Falls just right and you will likely get to see & shoot a double rainbow. ...which is a great end to a perfect day :)

Outstanding idea! The last time I went, I was there right before dawn. It was good for pictures. Once the sun comes out, a haze starts developing in the valley. Let's pick a spot/time to meet, as I might zoom up to catch the sunrise again!
