One of the great things about orienteering is being off-trail. I see so many interesting things while running through the woods that I wouldn't just hiking on a trail! I really "see" the terrain around me now.
I've been orienteering for about 12 years and really enjoy it. I first tried it in northern CA to help with my kayak navigation skills, but enjoyed it so much that I've continued ever since with all kinds of orienteering. I especially like night courses!
Sea kayaking, hiking, camping, cycling, etc.
