Peaceful Circus Protest at JPJ arena

We’re writing to you today because we thought you’d be interested to know that the circus is coming to town. Specifically, the Ringling Brothers Circus will be at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville starting May 1st, and Voices for Animals is organizing a legal and peaceful protest. There are many people who don’t know how inherently cruel and inhumane animal circuses are. Animals in circuses spend about 11 months/year traveling, during which time they are chained, isolated, forced to stand in their own waste and to tolerate unhealthy extremes of temperature. Animals are trained using methods based upon fear and pain, starting when they are separated from their mothers as babies. Social animals are isolated and "broken" to allow this cruel training to take place. Standard circus industry training tools used on animals include bullhooks, whips, clubs, and electric prods. Every major circus that uses animals has been cited for violating the minimal standards of care set forth in the United States Animal Welfare Act (AWA); however, officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (which enforces the AWA) have repeatedly ignored obvious physical trauma to animals, eyewitness accounts of mistreatment, and sworn testimony from former circus employees who report abuse of elephants. Voices for Animals believe that this dark and cruel industry has no place in our community, but we need our community’s help. We need volunteers willing to leaflet at Fridays after Five on April 25th and at the City Market/Downtown Mall on April 26th, and of course we hope you will join us in our peaceful protest of the Ringling Brothers Circus at the John Paul Jones Arena May 1st, 5:00-7:30 on Massie Ave. across from the JPJ arena. Can you help, or do you know someone who can? Please “Like” our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/keepanimalcircusesoutofalbemarle, or contact us at [masked] for more information. Your voice is important- thanks for using it! Wendy Keller Harper and Stacey Norris, on behalf of Voices for Animals

I will do my best to attend- I am very passionate about animal rights causes and the importance of social activism. But my Mom is moving to CA May 7th, so I may be helping her pack and spending some last minute time with her. Where should we park, and should we bring/make signs or will they be provided? Thanks so much for organizing!!!!

Due to widespread community interest, a second peaceful protest against Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus has been added. It will be on Saturday, May 3, 2014, from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM, across the street from John Paul Jones Arena. Please RSVP to [masked] or to Stacey Norris at[masked] if you are coming.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
