Vegan Cookie Exchange

Hi Everyone!

A new Vegan Meetup has been scheduled! It will be on Saturday, December 1st, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Chris and Darlene, of the famous eatair blog, who have hosted many times in the past, have planned and graciously offered to host the event! This event is themed as a Vegan Cookie Exchange Meetup. Everyone is invited! Bring your friends, 2-dozen of your favorite Vegan Cookies to share, or just yourself! If you know of anyone that is interested in our vegan potluck gatherings, please encourage him or her to attend, even if he/she is not signed up on meetup.com. The more folks we can get to attend, the better!

The event is centrally located in Charlottesville, and the address will be in the e-mail to members, and viewable by members on our website. Certainly feel free to e-mail myself, or Chris and Darlene at [masked], with any questions, and I’ll make any updates as necessary. Directions to Chris and Darlene's address are posted for members as a Word File on our meetup webpage… just click on the "More" tab on the top of our meetup webpage, and then select the “Files” tab from the drop-down box in order to download the directions.

If you are able to RSVP, it would be appreciated so that our hosts will know approximately how many people to expect. As usual, you need not be a vegan to attend our meetups, but please only bring vegan food. If you are unsure if an ingredient is vegan, you can e-mail me, and I'll be happy to let you know. Basically, make sure there is no meat, poultry, fish, Dairy, Egg, or insect products, or any byproducts from those ingredients.

Here's a quick word from our hosts about their vegan Cookie Meetup:

Cookie exchanges are popular this time of year but if you're vegan, you can't really participate because most cookies aren't vegan. This one will be different! We're not into having complicated rules so we'll keep it simple. Bring 2 dozen vegan cookies, take 2 dozen cookies with you (or eat a dozen while you're here and take a dozen with you - whatever). You can bring all one kind or mix it up. Holiday themed cookies are great but any variety will do just fine. We'll provide hot cider and tea. We have a handful of tea/coffee mugs, but probably not enough for everyone, so if you could bring your own mug that would be great.

Note that there's no on-street parking in front of our house. Anyone who gets here early can feel free to park in our driveway but our driveway will only hold 2-3 cars. After that, folks can park wherever they can find space but probably the best bet is to drive past our house on Chesapeake St. and turn left on Riverside Ave. There's plenty of parking on-street there and then it's only a 2-3 minute walk to our house.

Here's a wonderful opportunity for new folks who have not been to prior Vegan Meetups to come out and join our vegan community! We'd love to have you at the event!

Thanks for the great company and great cookies! We acquired an extra black mug and a tupperware with pink top and popcorn inside. If anyone would like to claim one of these items just stop by our house.

I just want to let everyone know that I'll be making my infamous rumnog cookies (which have nuts) and Chai Spice Snickerdoodles (100% nut free) for the cookie exchange. I'll make sure to bring a list of ingredients but I want to let everyone know that I am bringing a nut free option :)

Hello everyone! Just a note about colds and other viral infections. If you have a bad cold, fever, cough or stomach bug then we are asking that you sit this one out since I am in the last trimester. Thanks so much everyone! See you on Saturday and happy baking.

Do you think this would be ok for someone with a tree nut allergy? Will cookies be marked for allergens like peanuts, soy or tree nuts?

    November 25, 2012

    • Chris B.

We haven't specifically requested that allergens be labeled but perhaps most people who are coming will be paying attention to this conversation and will now plan to bring a list of ingredients. Actually, many people regularly label their food offerings with an ingredient list anyway. I imagine you'd be likely to find enough cookies that are tree nut/peanut free but soy is potentially more tricky because a lot of us are probably using soy milk in our recipes and if not that then almond milk.

Ingredients lists are always appreciated, both for allergen and for other reasons. Even when eating a vegan product, I prefer to know what is in it.
