Seoraksan National Park - Dinosaur Ridge Hike & Fall Foliage! - FULL

Let's hike at Seoraksan National Park during the peak of fall foliage in that that region! We will leave Seoul on Friday night so that we can arrive at the trailhead around 3am to begin our hike. We will hike up to Daecheongbong (1,708m), Seoraksan's highest peak, and watch the sunrise. From there we will make our way to the starting point of Dinosaur Ridge. We will separate into two groups at this point. Those who want to hike along the ridge will continue onward, while those who would like to shorten the hike by a few hours will head down the valley. The Dinosaur Ridge hike will take around 13-14 hours total and will go up and over a lot of different peaks. It will involve a lot of steep and rocky terrain, but is worth the effort. The valley course will take about 10 hours, and will take you past some very scenic waterfalls on the way down to the base of the park. It will be an incredible time of year to hike these trails, so let's go!

if anyone wants to see them (Dinosaur Ridge version). I'd add them to this event's album, but I figure they're uploaded in enough places already.

Google cuts these down to save space. Full-size versions are available on request.

I really enjoyed the hike at Seoraksan, great views, great bunch of people. The only thing that bugged me was it was pretty busy, obviously this time of year is very popular to hike. Will need to go again at a less busier time of year. Massive thanks to Heather and Dong- jeh for organizing a very well arranged and planned Meetup. See you all again soon when I've recovered from this hike....

The crowds we encountered on the way to the peak were unpleasant for me too, but I'm glad the rest of the hike wasn't like that. I wish I look a picture of the long line of headlamps though! I think June and September would be better months to go... much less crowded and the mountains are green and beautiful then.^^ See you on another hike ^_^

Sorry about your sudden illness, but we have the following refund policy: 7 days (or more) in advance - Full refund. (October 11th or earlier)

      6 days to 48 hours - 50% refund. (October 12th - October 15th)

48 hours or less - No refund. (October 16th or later)

      October 20, 2013

    • Heather G.

I cannot give last minute refunds, otherwise I will have to cover the full price of the bus myself if many people cancel at the last minute. It would be a huge financial burden for me to do so, so that's why my group and many other hiking meetup groups have this kind of refund policy. Sorry for the inconvenience and hope you are feeling better.

Okay, thanks for letting me know!

      October 18, 2013

  • Heather G.

I sent an email about our trip to all attendees (it has my phone number & other info). If you didn't get it, let me know! Please send me an email with the following information:

    *Name
    *Phone number
*Kakao ID (if you have one)
*Intended Hiking course (Dinosaur Ridge or Valley Course)
*Emergency Contact (Name, phone number or email)

    1 · October 17, 2013

Also, giving emergency contact info is completely optional (and hopefully unnecessary). Because I'm taking a large group on a long hike, I thought it would be good to have. Please give your phone number/Kakao ID if you have it, though! ^^

Is the head lamp/lantern necessary? I don't have one :(

    October 15, 2013

    • Heather G.

The first few hours of the hike will be in the dark, so you must bring some kind if light. A headlamp is best because both of your hands can be free. If you don't want to buy one, then bring a flashlight.^^ (a smartphone's light is not a good choice, for those who are wondering.^^)

Hello peeps, anyone know what the temperature is going to be like at the peak in the morning or throughout the day on the ridge? Does 3 or 4'C sounds about right? I'm new here so just want to get an idea from someone who's been up there.

    October 15, 2013

    • Heather G.

It may get as low as 0C/32F at night, and will be around 19C/66F in the daytime. Make sure to wear a warm jacket, hat, and gloves (it's better to bring more warm clothing than you think you'll need... You can always take it off if you're too warm). Wear layers because you'll get warmer later in the day! I needed a tshirt when I hiked last weekend!

Thank you for the advice! I've been breaking in my new shoes for a few days. I really want to wear them since my old sneakers are not good quality and they were killing my feet last time. Maybe I will just bring the old pair with me? They aren't heavy.

      October 15, 2013

    • Heather G.

Try wearing your new ones every day before the trip. Bring extra socks so you can avoid blisters, and bring bandaids to cover any parts of your feet that are rubbing against your boots too much. If you have extra space for your old shoes, then feel free to bring them.^^

Dong-jeh was able to find a larger bus today, and though the price is higher than normal (supply & demand is not in our favor), we may be able to get this bus if enough people are interested in coming. I've already heard from several people. Who would definitely like to come if there is space?

    October 12, 2013

    • Heather G.

I feel bad that there are several of you who really want to come, but can't. I tried my best to make it possible though! Hopefully we'll all hike together another time!^^

Sorry everyone, we cannot get a larger bus (nothing available anymore). Only the people on the "Yes" list will be able to attend, but there's a waiting list just in case someone cancels. Seats are always first come, first served (based on who pays first) so it's important to pay as early as possible if there's a meetup you really want to attend!^^

    October 12, 2013

    • Heather G.

Hopefully we'll all hike together another time, there are more chances to see autumn leaves at other mountains!^^

    October 11, 2013

    • Heather G.

There was a lot of interest in this trip, but I had to reserve a bus based on the number of payments I received. It is a peak traveling period (fall foliage) so it was important for me to secure a bus early. Remember all of our trips are first come, first served based on whoever pays first!^^

      October 11, 2013

  • Heather G.

Arianna and Darren, please check your email, I sent you both an update about the trip~

    October 11, 2013

  • Leila T.

Will I be ok with sneakers? Or do I need to get hiking boots?

    October 10, 2013

    • Heather G.

Hiking boots are preferable because the hike is long and covers rocky terrain. If you think your sneakers have good grip on rocks and can keep you comfortable for the whole hike, then feel free to wear them.
