Herb Day (Ohio Herb Education Center)

The Ohio Herb Education Center is hosting its annual Herb Day event on May 11th! This event is free to attend and will feature herbs for sale, vendors, presentations, and workshops. I'm planning on going and thought I'd let you all know about it too!

Events scheduled (so far) include:

  • 9a-4p - Plant sale by the Ohio Herb Education Center
  • 9a-4p - Over 30 vendors with a variety of products and services
  • 10am-12pm - Meet and ask your garden related questions to Ohio's Garden Sage, Debra Knapke
  • 10am - "Weeds as Companion Plants" with Barbara Arnold, Horticulture Program Coordinator at Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens
  • 12pm - "Plants as Edible Landscaping" with Val Jorgensen, owner of Jorgensen Farms, the official farm of the Herbal Trail
  • 2pm - "Using Your Garden as Your Medicine Cabinet" with Dawn Combs, owner of Mockingbird Meadows
  • Live music performance by the Shaw Brothers and Casey Redmond

Hope to see you there! If anyone is interested in carpooling, please comment here with where you will be coming from and if you are willing to drive (or would like a ride) and we'll see what we can work out between us.

Well in all honesty I thought we were at 9:00 at The Ohio Herb Education Center and so I went there first around 9:05 asking the volunteers if anyone from our group was there. I waited for about ten minutes and saw no one else was looking around and figured out I was the only one thinking we were meeting up there. Did anyone else do this?

I like posting everything on the meetup part so we can 'rsvp' and see who else is going easily instead of sorting through a whole thread. I think Jimm's idea is good in just labeling them into three different categories: Structured; where we are doing something specific with only SSS members (or at least hosted by SSS and getting together is expected). Freeform; with things that aren't SSS but that we are interested in. and Classes; where classes there are not hosted by SSS but that we might be interested in. To me it seems like there are a LOT of classes, and while they sound really neat I can't do classes as I have small children who would just be disruptive. Looking right now at the meetups it seems that there are mostly classes, a couple freeform, and only one structured.

Thanks, Tash! We'll take everyone's ideas into consideration and try to come up with a system that is helpful and easy to use.

I thought we were meeting up at the Ohio Herb Education Center at 9:00am so I went there first asking around and no one seemed to know anything about our meet up. I waited around a few minutes and figured out I was the only one thinking we were meeting up there.
I did end buying some nice plants and attended Barbara and Val's workshops which both were very good.
However I was a tad disappointed in Barbara's workshop when someone afterward asked her about removing weed seeds and rather than recommending drowning them out with some type of mulch or tarp ect the first words out of her mouth was a Pre emergent herbicide. Ouch!!! Not the right answer in my book. I did say something to Barbara afterward wishing she would have included in her presentation the very best environmental sustainable, friendly less toxic way to deter weed seeds is drowning them out with mulch or some type of non toxic cover. I got the feeling she was in agreement.

Glad you were able to get some plants and sit in on some seminars!

I didn't even get there until around 1. I have heard you can use corn starch as a pre-emergent. I just pull in the garden, leave alone in the yard. I have also smothered with cardboard.

Very quaint little place offering locally made herb/plant products. For Herb day they had some tasty treats and tea made with herbs.

Too bad we didn't plan to all meet somewhere specific to meet face-to-face.

It seemed like everyone was going to be there around different times... for future events we'll make more of an effort to let people know when we are planning on going to see if anyone is interested in meeting at a certain point for a little while. Thanks for your input!

I am sorry I missed seeing Mockingbird Meadows & meeting up with Dawn. Were you in the same spot or area as last year? I met you on Herb Day last year through my very good friend Gail the massage therapist.

Stop by our booth and say hi! I'll be doing a workshop at 2pm... and for those of you who came yesterday to the companion planting workshop- definitely check out Barbara Arnold's workshop at 10am!

We went last year and my kids loved it. We also walked along the trail by the river. Because of the kids I won't be able to do any of the talks.
