Monday Central Phoenix Writer's Workshop

This is an informal gathering every week that is designed to promote feedback on work, and to highlight the strengths of one's work as well as offer ideas to improve weaknesses. Attendees are encouraged to bring pieces to read that they are comfortable sharing. Poems, Essays, and stories are all fair game. Generally, anything over 4-6 pages will be read over several sessions. We recommend bringing extra copies if you can.

The general flow is some gab time at first. Then people will read the works out loud (or ask someone else to) one at a time and usually ask for feedback. Some people want help with their work, others might just want grammar lessons. If someone has lots of feedback, it is usually best to mark up a copy and hand it back.

The meeting generally lasts two to three hours. If someone has to leave early, let everyone know so your work can be read first. Likewise, if you will be late but intend to read, let the moderators know in advance.

It is useful for me as a poet to discover in the comment time the poetry concepts that work for various members of the group. Invariably, something that works at one MeetUp does not work at a 2nd or even a 3rd different MeetUp. I guess it really all depends on the poetry experiences and knowledge of the individual MeetUp members. I did receive good feedback.

A good meeting with three groups, plenty of critique.

I need to cancel. I need the time to work on my upcoming dog hearings. I thought of reading my letter to my neighbors, and what I plan to say in court, but this is not the kind of writing that I wanted to show up for. I will work on an essay on the whole experience after the court date, and will bring that for the first thing that I share.

This is my first meeting. Planned a short story. Then, my dog bit someone, and I have been writing, hoping to write my way out of this mess. Need a break. If it's OK, I will still come and read what I think is the best poem ever, by someone else.
