God in the Lab

Description: A day with some of the World's leading scientific researchers into faith, many from Oxford University. We'll be looking at hearing voices, possession, etc. What goes on the brain of someone hearing voices? Come and see the MRI scans. Is religious belief hard-wired into us? Yes, says one of our scientists, and provides the empirical evidence. One of our speakers was recently featured in NEW SCIENTIST magazine: Born believers: How your brain creates God.

A unique opportunity to hear and question those working at the cutting edge of this growing field of scientific research. Presented by CFI London and the Ethical Society.

To book, send a cheque payable to “Centre for Inquiry London” to: Executive Director Suresh Lalvani, Centre for Inquiry London, at the above address (Include names of all those coming). Alternatively pay by PAYPAL. Use the “Support CFI UK” button at www.cfiuk.org and follow the instructions. Or just show up! £10 or £5 concessions.
Start Time: 10:30 (for 11.00)
End Time: 16:00

Thanks for the very useful feedback on this event - I'd welcome more if anyone else wants to comment here. I had a great time - but I agree it was maybe a bit too much like an academic conference in format. The next event on 25th April has much the same format already, but I will make sure the Monsters event in September reflects comments made here. Especially re length and number of talks. Might include a workshop.

I think I might have made a mistake in signing up for this Meetup. I really like the idea and since I enjoy reading Stephen's work I'd go to a Meetup he's organizing in a flash except I'm in Canada and that makes it tough for me to work the Meetup into my schedule. Still, if I'm ever in the UK I'd love to take in one of these.

    •  I enjoyed the presentations a lot. More socializing could also have been nice Thanks for organizing, hope there will be more similar events in the future Raffaella
    •  Very good performances from 4 speakers. Interesting research results on children and other vulnerable groups to show how the brain works raised more questions than answers. Perhaps now that god has spent some time in the lab should be taken to another area and see what the results are.
    •  There were some very interesting aspects of the presentations, but I also felt that some of the research was fundamentally flawed in it's approach (in my humble opinion).

I thought that the contributions varied considerably in quality of work and of presentation. Four one-hour presentations is quite hard going and it did not allow much time for questions and discussion. I strongly suggest that, at future meetings, each speaker should give a 30- 40 min presentation with 20 - 30 min for discussion. Instead of the organiser having to plead with people to pay up, there could have been someone on the door to inspect tickets and take money.
    •  The morning session was particularly good.
    •  Traditional format. Guest speakers and questions from the floor after. I only caught the last 2 hours of this day long event. Very informative. Any more inclusive, interactive sessions planned? Perhaps there was time for chatting and meeting at the lunch break but I missed that. My attention span for listening to lectures is very limited. Especially after lunch! I will attend again tho' most Saturdays I can't make it till 2 pm earliest
