Hi. I'm Sandi.  I created this group to bring people together to explore the benefits of Chair Yoga. As someone who has practiced yoga for many years, I have noticed that there are many people in New York who want to enjoy the benefits of yoga but need a gentler way to do it. Chair Yoga is a great way for the elderly, overweight, people in rehabilitation, women who are pregnant, those with injuries, or those with other health concerns to increase strength, flexibility and balance. By transferring the practice of yoga to a chair instead of a mat, stresses on the joints and limbs are eliminated. Focused breathing, guided meditation, and chanting provide a mind-body integration that helps in overall wellness.

Who can do Chair Yoga? In a word — everyone. Chair Yoga can be practiced by those who might otherwise be excluded from traditional yoga. People who are overweight or obese frequently avoid exercise either because of the physical limitations or embarrassment in a public setting. Chair Yoga, because it is performed in a seated position, is less taxing and enables students an easier entry point into the practice. Those with other physical limitations can benefit from Chair Yoga. People recovering from lower extremity trauma or surgery, in casts or splints, can still perform the stimulating and invigorating postures. Those suffering with neuropathies or balance disorders, where traditional exercise or standard yoga practice is not appropriate can also benefit. The elderly are perfect candidates for Chair Yoga. Seniors can enjoy the physical and mental benefits offered by this accessible form of exercise. In addition to the physical benefits—including: increased movement and range of motion, strength, and improved balance—the group setting encourages socialization.

I am a certified Chair Yoga instructor, and I have seen a need to start a group like this, so I want to bring people together.  If enough people join, we can start to do classes together, and I can show everyone how to do Chair Yoga. In the meantime, if anyone is interested in private lessons, please feel free to visit my website and to contact me. www.ChairYogaWithSandi.com

Thank you,

Sandi
