For readings to discuss at this meetup, we'll be looking at two finalists for the 2013 National Magazine Award for Features Writing:
"I Was a Warehouse Wage Slave" by Mac McClelland for Mother Jones
"Atonement" by Dexter Filkins for The New Yorker
A few quick answers about the first meeting:
Why should people come?
This will be a night for fans of nonfiction features and books to have a free and open discussion about some noteworthy new works. It will also be a chance to meet with and chat with other nonfiction readers. We'll share thoughts on recent stuff we liked (and maybe some work he didn't like).
It already looks like an interesting, diverse mix of readers in this group; you can help us make it even better.
What will we be doing?
For the first meeting, we'll introduce ourselves and talk about what we'd like to get out of this meetup overall.
After that, we'll dive into a discussion of one or two longform nonfiction features that I'll announce a couple weeks beforehand. I'll moderate the discussion for this kickoff event, but expect that it will be an open, free discussion.
At the end, we'll look ahead to the next meetup, pick a likely date, and consider what we'd like to discuss for that one.
And then what?
In future meetups, we may tackle nonfiction books. We might also schedule events where we invite a nonfiction author or journalist to speak to the group. For nonfiction writers in the group, we may have meetups to focus on work they'd like to share or discuss.
