[Due to the weather alert and potentially hazardous roads, we're going to postpone tonight's meetup.  New date will be announced shortly!]

Happy new year! We're going to kick off 2014 with a discussion of Five Days at Memorial by Sheri Fink.

A quick tease of the book:

Pulitzer Prize winner Sheri Fink’s landmark investigation of patient deaths at a New Orleans hospital ravaged by Hurricane Katrina – and her suspenseful portrayal of the quest for truth and justice

In the tradition of the best investigative journalism, physician and reporter Sheri Fink reconstructs 5 days at Memorial Medical Center and draws the reader into the lives of those who struggled mightily to survive and to maintain life amid chaos.

Hopefully you can all make it. And some of you lurkers out there, make it your New Years Resolution to meet some other nonfiction fans in January. Come on out and join us!

I finished the book and was raring to discuss it...but I suppose it's important to pay attention to weather emergencies.

I see flakes!!! In Chapel Hill that counts as a white out blizzard worthy of cleaning out the breadshelves in the grocery stores. Hunker down time. perhaps 20 people will come the the postponed meeting...

It's pouring down snow where I am. I was about to sent a note that it was a really good call!

I would rather stay home tonight than go out on the icy roads. My vote is for postpone.

I read the book, but can't come to the meeting. I would love to hear what people had to say about it. For a future meeting I wonder if you are interested in reading and discussing the Grantland piece, "Dr. V's Magical Putter" by Caleb Hannan, perhaps together with some of the pieces written in response and the editor's follow-up. It seems a great opportunity to explore issues of journalistic ethics and where to draw the line in the public and private sphere.

For those of you who read the October readings (Elvis Impersonator...), J. Everett Dutschke admitted his guilt. What a great story that was!

Maggie has graciously offered a copy of the audiobook this weekend. If I don't make it through that in time I'll let you know, as I can read faster than be read to.

Hello friends - the copies at the Chapel Hill Library are already on hold (even the e-audio) and it's out in Carrboro too. I don't have a Kindle. Can anyone lend me a hard copy?

I was one of the holds, and I just canceled it. So that leaves 4 holds : )

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
