Nonfiction Readers & Writers January Meetup (rescheduled)

  • Jan 26, 2014 · 8:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

[This is the proposed reschedule date for the discussion of "Five Days at Memorial", which was cancelled due to the "extreme weather" warning from this past week... Please note the 8pm start time (vs. the typical weekday 7pm start...  Hope you all can make it; and maybe a few of you who had conflicts this week]

Happy new year! We're going to kick off 2014 with a discussion of Five Days at Memorial by Sheri Fink.

A quick tease of the book:

Pulitzer Prize winner Sheri Fink’s landmark investigation of patient deaths at a New Orleans hospital ravaged by Hurricane Katrina – and her suspenseful portrayal of the quest for truth and justice

In the tradition of the best investigative journalism, physician and reporter Sheri Fink reconstructs 5 days at Memorial Medical Center and draws the reader into the lives of those who struggled mightily to survive and to maintain life amid chaos.

Hopefully you can all make it. And some of you lurkers out there, make it your New Years Resolution to meet some other nonfiction fans in January. Come on out and join us!

I was looking for the New Yorker piece on eyewitness testimony and memory, but instead came across the one about the Texas arson case:

Yep, that's the one I mentioned. Fantastic story, but very haunting. Hard to get out of your mind...

when long form is bad form:

I was going to bring this to talk about tonight, but I feel the flu coming on, so think I'll spare you all and stay home tonight in case my chills and ick are foretelling worse than mere under-the-weather. Though I do feel under the weather, too ---oppressed by the below freezing weather to come all week. Stay warm. I enjoyed the book, but prefer reading long forms with you all.

I'm not going to be able to come because my daughter has a killer migraine. I'm bummed because I suggested the book! And enjoyed it. I'm going to try to convince my friend Jim to come without me (he came last time and he did read the book).

I'm bringing my guy Hal, who I convinced to read it with me (well, to listen to it anyway!)
