Itinerary

Sun Jan 26

Arrive at a small, family run hotel with gardens and private rooms, just a few minutes from the international airport. Rest from travel in the open-air lounge, observe tropical birds and eat a dinner of local Costa Rican specialties.

Monday Jan 27

Travel to the Arenal Volcano. Check into an eco-lodge with views of the volcano, followed by guided hike at the volcano and sunset viewing at the Lake Arenal Dam. We’ll eat dinner at our eco lodge and have time to swim in the pool or soak in the on-site hot springs.

Tues, Jan 28

Paddle in a raft down a gentle river, observing wildlife like basilisk lizards, monkeys, and a wide variety of birds. We’ll make a day of it with a stop to visit a family farm. Enjoy another evening of pool and springs time, or walk the self-guided trails and gardens at the lodge. Massages, zip-line tours, and other options are available at an additional fee and may be arranged, time permitting.

Wed, Jan 29

Depart for coast, traveling the scenic route around Lake Arenal. Stops for photos, lunch, and brief shopping.  Arrival in Manuel Antonio in time for exploring the village, shopping, and sunset beach walk. Check into our second eco-lodge, with new on-site trails and gardens to explore.

Thurs, Jan 30

Kayak in the Pacific Ocean with spectacular views of the rocky coast and lush jungle. Stop to snorkel a colorful reef, full of tropical fish and sea creatures. Enjoy sunset over the ocean, a delicious dinner and time for searching for tiny colorful frogs and other nocturnal animals before falling asleep to the sounds of the jungle and sea.

Fri, Jan 31

Tour Manuel Antonio National Park, one of the most popular parks in Costa Rica known for its bio-diversity, with a local expert. The endangered squirrel monkey is one of the animals that can be viewed here, as well as parrots, colorful songbirds, sloths, and capuchin monkeys.  In the afternoon we will travel away from the coast, to get an early start on the following day’s adventure.

Sat, Feb 1

La Paz Waterfall Gardens has confiscated, rehabilitated Costa Rican animals that are now living in lush exhibits. This provides an opportunity for up-close viewing of jaguars and other cats that are very rare to see in the wild. Birds, monkeys, frogs, and reptiles are also on display. A hummingbird garden attracts dozens of species. An orchid garden and traditional farm house are also included, making for a full day of exploration and photo opportunities. After an abundant buffet lunch, walk the well-maintained trails past the spectacular waterfalls on the property. After this big day, we will return to our first night’s guest house and order a light meal delivered in.

The trip was an adventure of a lifetime! At 71, never thought I'd be ziplining, tasting termites right off the nest, petting a 3 toed sloth crossing the lawn at one lodge, climbing up the base of an active volcano, eating lunch in a WWII airplane, no mosquitoes and no rain, and feeding hummingbirds by hand!!

This looks like fun! How much does airfare normally run?

I use my Delta card all of the time. I fly free at least twice a year! Delta is the best flight also to Costa Rica because if there are any maintenance problems, there are several options for flights there the same day!

      September 18, 2013

    • Heather H.

Delta is now offering 35000 miles when you obtain the card!! This was enough for us to get our tickets .......

Sara - I am wondering if I stay an extra 4 or 5 days if you can direct me to accommodations, recommendations, etc. I am thinking that I will get the most out of the airfare expense by enjoying a few more days after the paddle .... I have been reading about Costa Rica and it sounds too fantastic not to enjoy a little more ... Heather
