We'll meet at the cafe at the Earth Fare at South Windemere Shopping Center at 74 Folly Rd Blvd, Charleston. We always welcome newcomers! Come join a women's writing circle and see what wondrous writing you discover.
We are a writing process circle (as opposed to a writing critique group) for new and experienced women writers in the Charleston area. We will meet regularly to write to a prompt or two and then, by turn, read our piece out loud. Listeners will give positive feedback to which the reader listens without response.
When we read our own words, we hear what we have written and recognize its truth. When we listen to others respond positively to our own writing, their comments often reveal to us what we have not been able to see.
We will work out the particulars — such as where and when — once we have a circle of writers formed. We will meet for two hours weekly or biweekly to write and read and respond to the writing. In order that the circle feels safe, we will agree to some boundaries such as arriving on time, staying for the entire circle, stopping on time, confidentiality, responding to the writing and not the writer, and more. We'll make time for socializing after the writing practice is done.
"Surrendering to the creative process is a solitary leap into emptiness. We practice taking this leap over and over again, reshaping ourselves and refining our souls. Each time we pick up the pen is an opportunity to . . . see through new eyes and with a new freedom of being . . . The company of others makes the journey meaningful, instructive, and a lot more fun." (from Women, Writing, and Soul-Making by Peggy Tabor Millin.)
If you're looking for a writing process circle as I've described, and you want to write in the company of other women writers, I hope you will consider joining the Charleston Women's Writing Circle. Please contact me if you have any questions.
