Pink Floyd said it best. Is there anybody out there? Just nod if you can hear me.

shall we try to resurrect this group?

      February 19

    • Michael S.

Someone who has time to spearhead the forays is what is needed. Someone who has time to choose locations and then get the required permits from the parks. Unfortunately, I can not do it.

I would love to meet you guys and get some tips on finding these in the wild. I'm lost, and I never tend to find anything. When I do, I have a very tough time identifying them even through research. Thanks

    • Kenny R.

I don't really think this group is active anymore. I'm out in the woods all the time. Chanterelles in upstate SC right now, coming soon to NC.

      June 16

    • Justin

That would be really awesome man...I actually just found some. Went out for my first time and found four species. I've done a lot of research, but I still can't pinpoint two of them. Is there a way I could e-mail you or something from here?

      June 16

  • Michael S.

Patrick, can you give more details as to the types of areas that you do well in? Don't give your spots away, but just in general... flood plains, open woods, pastures surrounded by woods, dense woods, what type of ground cover usually exists?... that would help many on here, even myself.

We'll continue foraging through this weekend. I've found them in every area of the county so look along creeks in your neighborhood and do the Easter Egg/Morel hunt early! Be careful of Poison Ivy which is beginning to open now. With all the rain we got yesterday, I suspect that some won't be coming up till late this week, early next week when some area's dry up more. I'll be posting photo's of finds on the Heartwood Tree Service Facebook page by the end of the week so you can get inspired. I love these mushrooms and hunting them so much they turn me into a selfish child when it comes to sharing. They're that good! I'll be heading to the Asheville area late next week to comb the north facing slopes around Ash trees as well. Bonus find up there is Ramps.

      April 8

    • Kenny R.

Lots of people look around Tulip trees as well as ash. Same idea though, high side of flood plain.

      April 8

  • Patrick G.

Got 80 this weekend in a couple of my favorite spots, my brother got 50 today. I'm thinking Wed/thursday it will be on. If you're on this forum and haven't been morel hunting, the time is now and for the next week. Get out there NOW! Had morel and white cheese pizza last night. Steak and mushrooms tonight.

    April 7

  • Michael S.

I think you are right. I went out twice this week to spots where there should have been some and found nothing. Lots of poplars, ashes and a few elms, and the ground cover was what I like to see too. I will go out again late this week.

    April 7

  • Kenny R.

This week should be perfect with the rain and temps.

Hey guys, I'm the moderator/slash organizer based solely on the fact that I've paid the dues because I didn't want to see this group die last year. I just re upped for 6 months at $72. I own/manage Heartwood Tree Service and manage the thequeenscrown.org which identifies and manages old and large trees. I don't have the time to manage or lead this group. I'm asking for someone to take the lead. I'll continue to pay one more time in September if we get an organizer.

    • Kenny R.

Cool, good to know, would love to get some wood that still has sugars stored instead of already budding or having leaves. Will call tom.

      April 2

  • Patrick G.

Morels should start showing up next week. In the Charlotte/Mecklenburg last year I gathered close to 30 Lbs. See my photo from one foray. Probably a great idea to get on track would be to meet and those with a little experience can point out the trees and conditions to look for to find them, although I'm insanely selfish of my "Honeyholes" where I've found them. If someone wants to name a spot at a public park that has Ash trees in particular I'd be happy to show up, talk, point and do some prelim foraging. Tomorrow morning, Sunday, March 30th would work great for me as being outdoors is my place of worship. Name a place. 10 am.

    • Kenny R.

What an awesome offer, that wasn't even responded too. Gotta fix that.

      April 2

    • Patrick G.

Yeah, I'd still do it this Sunday but Saturday we're hosting the NC Tree climbing competition in Freedom Park.

Went out this afternoon and found a dozen small ones here in Charlotte. All on known producing spots that have some southern exposure. Too small today, maybe Tuesday.

    March 29

    • Kenny R.

Don't know anybody else thats found them around here, but like you said, southern exposure. Dunno how trustworthy this site is, but looks like not too many found this far north yet. http://morelmushroomh...

      April 2

    • Patrick G.

That's me on the hunters site. Found 12 more small ones in Rock Hill. The one's we found on the weekend haven't done anything and checking my regular sites is showing nothing. I believe just a little rain this weekend will make things pop.

I'm new at this but should we try to meet as a group? pick a Public Park somewhere around Charlotte and go from there

Original meetup was at an Olive Garden, I like this idea much better.

      March 22, 2014

  • Kenny R.

Hey guys. There seemed to be a lot of interest in all getting together, but no follow through. If we are going to have any forays soon, we should start planning them now. Thoughts/suggestions?

    March 21, 2014

  • Michael S.

Yep... dry here too. No puffballs or Blewets or Shaggies. The Oysters I am finding now must be bale to handle dry conditions better than most.

    November 20, 2013

  • Steve D.

Been dry and slow in Mt. Pleasant. Not even any puffers to be found this fall.

    November 20, 2013

  • Michael S.

It would be nice to get an update so that the 127 members don't start disappearing.
I have only found Oysters, and half of them were too Pleasing Beetle infested to eat.

Its been 2 and a half months since this was brought up? Any progress? Not much going on on the message boards. Anybody else foraging much?

Hello everyone, my friend and I have been researching about medicinal properties of different mushrooms, we have seen some videos and read some articles. I started looking for some kind of association and I only found in Asheville and Durham, and I finally was able to find this group, I believe this group would be a great group to meet new people, share experiences and learn from each other. While of course have fun! I'm up for a meeting whenever and whatever!!

I went to the fungi is medicine conference in Telluride a couple months back. Had some discussions with John's Hopkins as well as many others. I could probably be of some use.

      1 · October 27, 2013

What types of fungi have you been researching primarily? Turkey Tail, reshi, lion's mane........?

As I understand this item, it doesn't have a date, time or agenda, so my RSVP is solely to express interest. Yes, I am interested.

I tried to mention this before but I've got a bunch of slideshow presentations from NAMA on disc and on my computer. Might be a little boring during a meet and greet but would be something to do during the colder months when there aren't that many edibles out.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
