Optimizing a Unity 3D game for better mobile performance

Title:  Optimizing a Unity 3D game for better mobile performance

Game designer Dan Russell-Pinson will discuss various methods to improve mobile performance for Unity 3D games including: combining meshes, texture atlasing, polygon reduction, shared materials, static and dynamic batching, quality settings, light mapping and more.

Speaker:  Dan Russell-Pinson is the President of Freecloud Design, Inc. and the creator of several games including Stack the States, Tipping Point, Monster Physics, Presidents vs. Aliens and more. He studied Computer Science at Clemson University and combines his interests in programming, graphics, music and sound to create games that are both educational and fun.

FYI, here are some notes I took during Dan's talk:

    Mobile Optimization
    use static assets when possible
    40-50 draw calls
    20K polygons max

Check and see what kind of shader are being used
Adjust your textures to the smallest res as possible.
Set receive shadows to off where you can
Mark all of the objects as Static is you are not going to move them
LightMapping - do this for your static objects and your terrain

t4m - convert terrain to a mesh —> this helps in reducing draw calls
cruncher —> reduces polygons for a mesh
MeshBaker —> combines meshes into one large mesh
All number objects use a single material and change the UV mapping
Blender - use type tool to create numbers
