Prime Lens Photography - HDR

Main Purpose: To learn / experience the advantages (and even the disadvantages) of using a PRIME LENS which forces you to move your body in order to change the perspective of your image as opposed to turning the ring on your zoom lens.

We will shoot using only prime (fixed focal length, non-zoom) lenses.  Any type are welcome.

This Month's Topic:   HDR Photography

This month's Prime Lens Meetup will be an introduction into High Dynamic Range (HDR) Photography.  Steve will be on-hand to show members how to properly shoot images in preparation for the post processing that is customary to produce an HDR image.  (We will not cover any info regarding in-camera HDR  processing)

What to bring: Please bring prime lenses only for this event.  Although not necessary, bringing a tripod will help you to keep your images registered properly, and slow you down giving you more time to think and compose your image while fiddling with your settings.

We will shoot from 6:00-7:45pm, then head over to Mario's down the road for some post processing demos using various software techniques.

When in the park, just follow the signs to Lake Pointe Hall. We'll meet just behind Lake Pointe Hall facing the lake. There are tons of places to shoot here.  Most of all, we'll have some fun and hopefully learn something new!

Although this is a FREE event for all members, please RSVP, especially if your plans change and have to cancel. Members may bring a guest to use as a model or assistant.

Steve will be there to assist our members from 6:00-7:45pm.  After the shoot (7:50pm), for those that would like to continue to join us, we will meet just down the road at Mario's Pizza (7:50 - 9:50) to wind down, grab some food and drink, and see a few demos using HDR techniques.

Please plan on posting your best images to this event page and labeling each image with the focal length of the lens used, i.e. (50mm), so we can all enjoy and learn from them.  Selected images will be displayed at our main Monthly Meetup on Tuesday, August 5th.

It was a very interesting meetup, came away with a better understanding of the concepts of HDR photography. Wish the weather was a little more cooperative, but we made the best we could with what we had to work with. Had a real good time with fellow photo friends and of course afterwards at Mario's reviewing is always a plus. Thanks Steve for putting it all together.

This is the website for downloading a free trial of Photomatix, the software used in today's demonstration.

What time will the final decision be made about this event due to bad weather?

We are meeting at Flaming Chicken now, correct?

      July 24, 2014

    • Steve L.

      No, that is incorrect.

I'm sorry, but I will not be able to attend. I'm feeling sick. I was not able to find the place to remove my RSVP to provide someone else in the waiting list to attend.

No problem. I took care of it for you. Be well.

Steve, should we be shooting in Raw or Jpeg?

    July 23, 2014

    • Steve L.

      You may shoot in either.

      July 23, 2014

    • Steve L.

If you can shoot in both for this exercise, that would be ideal!

Because the subject of the Meet-up is taking pictures for HDR post-processing, is it expected that we bring our laptops for processing some of the images in HDR for view in Mario's Pizza?

    July 21, 2014

    • Steve L.

This is just a demonstration of ways to process HDR, but you are welcome to bring a laptop to try it out on your own.

Disappointed I can't make this meetup... I'll be back home in NY visiting family (and photographing my 2 week old nephew). I hope this is scheduled again, and soon! :) Take care.

Bummed I can't make it. I will be in hot Orlando next week. I do have my camera and my lenses with me I will do the assignment here in Orlando. Would you like me to post.

Sure thing...a remote post would be interesting. Be sure to include more details of the location of your image.

Arghhh....going to be out of town for this one. *Well done* HDR is a favorite of mine....but I haven't bracketed exposures in anger for quite some time now since re-discovering medium format. Maybe next time...
