Weather update: Looks like only 20% chance of rain tomorrow, we are on for shooting the sun!
This meetup was rescheduled from last week due to heavy rain and thunderstorms.

^------ Exact location where we are meeting

Summer is here, so let's get together and shoot a Sunset. We will meet at McDowell Park Nature preserve and talk briefly about some of the techniques for capturing a sunset.
Bring a camera, tripod, and optionally a remote.
Novices are welcome. If you don't have a tripod, let me know in advance and I'll try to bring an extra for you to use.
** If weather is bad the day of the meet-up, we will re-schedule. Check this page for info if the weather is looking iffy **

I was a little suprised that only eight people showed up. The sunset, although not spectacular, was still beautiful and I fel blessed for every one I get to see. Thanks to Chris for putting it on and as always there were some great people there to photograph the sunset with. Dan

The best thing one can learn about shooting sunsets is patience. I think all had fun and had the chance to create a great image or more.

Sorry this didn't work out for last night but glad to hear it has been rescheduled! Chris, thanks for keeping us updated on the weather status...looks like this pattern will be here all week.
July 11
Hi, any way you can host this on a weekend? Unfortunately, I have to work during the week.
July 10
Thanks for the notice. Hopefully next week will be better. The sunset after the rain will look really good though. I was at the park after the rain on Monday and the sun looks awesome :)

*** Cancelled ***
It is raining with T-Storms in South Charlotte. Sorry for the late notice but I was hoping the skies might clear up.
Feel free to stop by, but I don't want anyone out in thunderstorms this evening. I'll try to reschedule for a time when the sun is more cooperative.

ok Im on the north side of town and it looks pretty bad here, whats it look like out by the park... Don't really wanna drive an hour to find out its been cancelled. Can we get a visual weather report? I dont trust the weather man :)

A Sunset and it's array of color only lasts for so long ... and parks close at dusk ... and if this is a learning workshop .. one person can only give so much of themselves to each person to limit the number is knowing your own ability to give a great workshop ... be kind to those who volunteer their time and willingness to share..

Really hate to miss this one, but had something come up. I changed my rsvp, hope this class gets done again sometime. Can't wait to see some of the results from the class...post them up !!!
July 7
I just have to say - as a lead of other groups - the sun sets every day - go figure out how to photograph it any time you want if you have any issues with this meetup ... Enough said.
July 3
For those of us who have led group outings, there is a slight learning curve when we start out. Understanding and implementing all of the parameters that Meetup offers is sometimes a process. I hope Chris will have a positive experience leading the group, but griping about how he's doing it will be counter-productive to him hosting another.

I'm on the wait list...hoping I get a chance to go. Thanks to Chris for taking this on...being it seems to be popular, will you be doing another one anytime soon?
I hope the turnout is as good as the interest and people respect the event and cancel if they can't make it so others can attend.

As mentioned in the description, the format of this meetup is a workshop where I will go over some techniques for capturing sunsets and then let everyone have some free shooting time. Forty people is not a manageable number for this event. It would be unfair to those who might have questions about the subject or their camera settings for me to divide my time between so many folks.
My goal is to have everyone finish the day with a sunset image they can be proud of.

it is cpmg's policy to let the organizer of each event set their own parameters since they are the one taking responsibility for that event. however it should be noted that the sun sets 365 times a year and just b/c there is a waiting list for this event doesn't mean you can't go photograph it any time you'd like.

I just feel this needs to be said. Leaders volunteer their time and McDowell is open every evening. Just sayin' ...Chris has gotten a lot of flak.

Just out of curiosity is there a limited amount of sunset or space ? Steve has 30 to 40 people at his outdoor events and they usually just break up into groups. Obviously he/that rocks!
June 26
Yes it's only fair to let the person in order on the wait list automatically in. I was just able to check my email and didn't even know a spot opened until just now. I hope that I can get in too.
June 26
I have changed the RSVP mode to be automatic such that when a spot opens up, the person at the top of the waiting list will be automatically moved to the attending list. Sorry for any confusion with this. David and Theresa, I'll open an three spots to make sure you you get added
Here are the specific rules from Meetup for this RSVP mode:
"If a member is first in line on an automatic waiting list, they're moved into a spot automatically as soon as one opens up, and are notified by email."

Why doesn't the next person on the waiting list get the next open slot versus whoever longs in first????
