Usable Forms

  • Nov 15, 2010 · 6:30 PM

Forms are necessary for meaningful interaction on the Web. How can you create the best possible user experience with your Web forms?

  • What information do you really need?

  • Asking Questions: Be polite, be grammatical, be brief!

  • Suggestions for Copy

  • Selecting the Right Form Elements: Radio buttons or drop downs? Or neither?

  • Layout: Patterns to avoid, patterns to embrace

  • Necessary Evils: Registration, Required Fields, CAPTCHAs

This was my first meeting and I really enjoyed the Usable Forms presentation and the great interaction among developers and designers. The presenter, Tess, did a great job! My thanks to all those involved!

Tessa's thoughts were so clear last night, that I can tell this form has a badly placed "required" statement! :) Great discussions.

It was interesting to hear about making forms more user friendly, especially being a designer. Now I feel like when I am designing a form I can provide a better visual process for form pages.

Pure awesomesauce. Tessa has intimate knowledge of the meetup subject. I learned some best practices that we will be implementing in our forms from here on out. Great presentation

@Diona Thanks. I specialize in developing web forms in the transportation and logistics fields. I integrate dynamic maps where key data is made available in the forms for calculating costs, time, etc. and will be eager to learn what you and others prefer to use in form design and usage. Look forward to see you tomorrow.

@Lynn Are you talking about, for example, data entry forms for employees? I do have some recommendations for that in my talk.

  • Lynn M.

I'd like information useful to "low-tech" folks who need to make decisions about on-line forms for their employees to use.

@Henry, I will be discussing how to choose the most appropriate form element (including input controls), and also validation and required fields. Anything else you'd like me to cover, specifically?

    November 10, 2010

  • Diona K.

Henry, great question. What are you looking for in regards to input controls?

    November 9, 2010

  • Henry

Will you be discussing input controls?
