Thinking About the Context of Use

  • Mar 10, 2014 · 6:30 PM
  • Myjive (at NC Music Factory)

Steph Grace joins us to talk user experience and the context of use. She's a UX and interaction designer from Sydney, Australia and specializes in designing multi-platform experiences, primarily for IPTV applications and In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) systems.

As user experience experts fluid and responsive design principles are an essential aspect of our work. We often focus on the technology aspect of things, like screen size and platform, but sometimes we forget about things beyond the technology -- the user's needs, their mindset and how these may change with environmental factors and situation. In this session you'll hear some of her own experiences in designing multi-platform TV services for cable companies and In-Flight Entertainment systems for airlines. She'll talk about how these situations differ from designing for the web and what they can teach us about the importance of context of use.

Hey UXers - after last night's talk, I talked to Bermon a bit about giving this group a way to continue our conversation outside of just the once monthly meetings. As such, I created a facebook group - join here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/uxclt/

Great talk, Steph! You made some really great points, and clearly got the group thinking.

This is an interesting topic, and one that deserves more attention. Steph provided some real-life & relevant case studies of how this presents itself in the real world, which is always helpful. And she does a great job of engaging the audience both during the presentation and after for the Q&A. As they say down under (from where Steph hails), Cheers!
