Adam Howell, design lead at Skookum, will be joining us this month.
"Over my 10+ year design career I have almost always had a side project going on in addition to my dayjob.
When I don't, I'm miserable, but when I do, I'm not only happier professionally, I'm able to try new tools and approaches to problems, flex my creativity through total control of a product or project, and work with friends and colleagues in ways I wouldn't have been able to otherwise.
And while my side projects have varied a lot in size and success, the things they've taught me and the attention they've brought me has opened up doors that wouldn't have otherwise been opened.
In this talk I'll go through which of my past side projects succeeded and which didn't and why, talk about what I've learned after all these years of staying up late and waking up early to work on personal projects, and I'll end with some tips on how I've continued to find the time and energy for side projects even with a growing family and more responsibilities in my dayjob."
