Hey everyone, we are trying to plan out the next couple topics and we would like to do a nice introduction to JavaScript for some peeps that are not quite ready to be building musical balls with canvas and Node. So if you are newer to JavaScript, please respond with some topics you would personally like to hear about. Also, please note if this is a topic you would rather sit and listen too, or do a code-along type tutorial.

If you are more comfortable with JavaScript, we would love to hear your ideas too of the type of topics that helped get you to the point you are now.

I like the idea of code-alongs. Learning through doing.

Basic language features and patterns, closures, slightly less-straight-forward things like apply and arguments, browser discrepencies, et cetera.

I'm pretty new to js so I'm up for anything.

Here are 3 things that I hear questions on (and have questions on) the most:

  • Scope
  • Namespacing
  • Closures

I've heard all three explained more than once, but never explained well.

Hello All,

How about if we take a quick survey to sample our average javascript skill set
and let this contribute to shaping our plans? Say each of us reply with a 1-5 with
1 as beginner, 3 as Jr and 5 as advanced?

To henry's suggestion - 4ish.

Scope and closures are related and should probably be done together.

Probably lot to cover in an hour but:

rules of identifiers
operators
available types
by reference / by value
array/object literals
first class functions

For scope/closures what worked for me was getting to the point of understanding how to write a ".bind" method and why it worked.

Context, scope, closures, apply and call seem like part of one 'intro' to me. They're also where I see a lot of people stumble. I would enjoy doing a code along workshop on those sometime.

If possible can the presenters include some coverage of javascript APIs
serialization and deserialization of JSON in request and response objects.
For example, Google Maps v3 has recently been released and they
have included new API Services with both JSON and XML.
I am probably about a 2-3 level javascripter.
Thanks
Henry
