Argentine Tango is the original, less-pretentious form - nothing at all like you see on TV or in the movies. It is always danced connected to your partner – very romantic. What you may not know is the dance is improvised second by second, with the ladies staying in perfect synchronization with the men.
Watch this fantastic video!
Don't be intimidated, with the right teacher, the Argentine Tango is VERY easy to learn. In it's most basic form, it is nothing more than walking with your partner - with plenty of style.
Daniel Arredondo is a leader in the local Charlotte dance community and will be teaching us the tango - in less than an hour your toes will be twinkling. Our class is combined with his regular beginner class that evening, so we limit this meetup to 18 people. There's an automatic waiting list, so sign up - you'll probably make it.
You will not need a partner - there will be plenty of people to dance and practice with!!!
The class begins around 7:30pm and ends around 9:00pm. From 9:00pm until 11:30pm there is a " practica," a practice dance where everyone can put to work what they've learned. More experienced Argentine Tango dancers in the area attend the practica – so, stick around, it’s astounding what they can do.
Those of you who would like to come to socialize or just watch the practica are welcome to attend. Or you can come early to watch the lesson. There’s always a good crowd, plenty of seats and tables and a full bar. Lynn's Dance Club is a Charlotte landmark and there’s plenty of free parking.
Men, if you can bring some soft shoes to change into – slippers are best – that would be great. Women, this is your chance to wear a nice dress and your high heels. We recommend shoes that hold to your ankles.
It costs $3 to get into the club and the class is NOT free, but YOU get to decide it's value - AFTER you've taken the class. Anything would be good. $2 to $5 is customary. This allows Daniel to keep this old tradition, cover the expenses for the space, and build the community by spreading the word about Argentine Tango in Charlotte.
Donations: Twelve years ago we brought the tradition of authentic Argentine Tango to Charlotte. We started these classes to share the culture of this beautiful dance. In order to build our community and to encourage people to try this new experience we didn't want to make money the decision factor, so we proposed to teach the class and offer the practica first, and then let the students pay based on what they think the experience is worth, including their budget into the equation. This structure allows new-comers to feel more comfortable not having to worry about payment and at the same time, it allows for people that love this dance to be able to enjoy it without the money factor being a burden as well. We rely on our guests support to afford the space and in-turn we have been able to share the Argentine Tango with the Charlotte community for the past 12 years. We want to thank all of our patrons and we want to thank you in advance for your support!
