Board Game: Die Macher

I have a copy of Die Macher sitting on the shelf for too long and I really wanna bring this beast to the table. It is a classic game (ranked #67 on BGG) that has stood the test of time almost 30 years after it came out. However it is quite long and heavy so I figured I'll just post it first to see if there is any interest before we set the date and location. It'd be awesome if there is someone who has played it before but if there isn't I'd be happy to read over and explain the rules.

Die Macher is a game about seven sequential political races in different regions of Germany. Players are in charge of national political parties, and must manage limited resources to help their party to victory. The winning party will have the most victory points after all the regional elections. There are four different ways of scoring victory points. First, each regional election can supply one to eighty victory points, depending on the size of the region and how well your party does in it. Second, if a party wins a regional election and has some media influence in the region, then the party will receive some media-control victory points. Third, each party has a national party membership which will grow as the game progresses and this will supply a fair number of victory points. Lastly, parties score some victory points if their party platform matches the national opinions at the end of the game.

The 1986 edition featured 4 parties from the old West Germany and supported 3-4 players. The 1997 edition supports up to 5 players in the re-united Germany and updated several features of the rules as well. The 2006 edition also supports up to 5 players and adds a shorter 5 round variant and additional rules updates by the original designer.

I just spoke to Rail Tales and they can host us tomorrow in the late afternoon. I have updated the date and location and since it's a rather late notice please leave a note if it doesn't work for you or confirm under this comment that you are going.

If you want to get "a step ahead" and have an extra hour to spend, you can see a Die Macher demo at http://boardgamegeek.com/video/16365/die-macher/2gascb-die-macher-tutorial

I can play this Saturday. I could be at Rail Tails by 3:00 pm. That would give us seven hours to play which should be plenty of time (also we could shorten the game from 7 elections to 5 or 6 elections since it's the first game for everyone). I might be able to play on Sunday (will have to check with my wife) but I prefer Saturday.

I could do this weekend. Thad and Brooks are you available? We could probably go to rail tails for their board game night Saturday but since they close at 10 wed probably have to start before 5.

I can try and negotiate with my wife for this weekend but actually I will have more free time next month. What do other people think about this weekend and where do you want to meet?

I can't do Friday evenings. Saturdays and Sundays are usually pretty open, though. And yes, I can do this weekend.

    Hey all,

We have the full player count! I'm thinking due to the length of the game maybe a weekend afternoon works the best? Does any day this weekend or next weekend work for you? Or any other suggestion on date and location?

I'm not sure what I'll be doing Saturday but I was planning to play in the Lincoln's War tournament. Other than that I should be in the open gaming area.

I'll play Die Macher sometime but I will be at Prezcon all this week (24 February - 2 March). Usually I do most of my gaming on Fridays at the UVA Historical Simulation Society game club. You might consider attending Prezcon (www.prezcon.com) this week at the DoubleTree Inn. There will be 400+ gamers there and you might be able set up a game in the open game playing area. I've played the 4-player version of Die Macher and have a copy of the German 5-player version (1997) but have never had a chance to play it.

I have the valley games edition for 5. I'll only be available on Saturday for Prezcon though and I was planning on checking out the auction and flea market if I do go on Saturday (are they worth it?)

It certainly is worth it! This convention only happens once a year. Here is a list of games in this year's auction http://www.prezcon.co...
