Greenway Farms Hike

                  H I K I N G   A T   T H E  G R E E N W A Y

DATE:  Sunday December 29th

TIME:   1pm

DISTANCE:   5-6 miles

DIFFICULTY:  mostly moderate, with one section that is more difficult

MEETING LOCATION:  Meet in the parking lot directly across from the dog park, in front of the restrooms.  This parking lot is closer to the Hamil Road side entrance across from Bethel Bible Village

TRIP LEADER:   Kim

PETS:  Dogs are welcome as long as they remain on-leash.

We will walk approximately 5-6 miles along a trail that is mostly paved or gravel, covering most of the trails in the park, including a short walk down to see the views of the quarry.  Part of the hike will also include a more challenging section going up the Boy Scout Trail, which is a steep half-mile climb up Big Ridge before descending back down.

While most of the hike will be on the easy side of moderate due to some gentle rolling hills, the Boy Scout Trail segment will be a half mile of more strenuous hiking.  We'll take rest and water stops to get everyone past the challenging part but want to introduce folks to this hidden gem for a truly good workout.  This is a trail with some roots and rocks, but no rock hopping involved.

Very young children may find the Boy Scout Trail too challenging.

Meet in the parking lot directly across from the dog park, in front of the restrooms.  This parking lot is closer to the Hamil Road side entrance across from Bethel Bible Village.

There's something for everyone at that park. That's what I love about it.

Great hike today, everyone. I enjoyed meeting the new people and seeing some familiar faces. Sorry that sunshine didn't come through as I'd ordered, but at least it was a dry rain-free day. I hope you all enjoyed the Greenway and know it's a very safe and easy spot to hike/walk on your own.

It was great. It was the perfect initial hike for me after a 3-mo hiatus. Enjoyed the Farms as well as the company of all the hikers. Good interaction between everyone. Had a great time. I'll be back!

  • Kim B

Ok guys. I'm leaving soon and no smart phone so you'll have to text me or call but understand I'll be driving for a bit. Weather looks perfect!

    December 29, 2013

  • Charles P.

Kim, Sorry to cancel so late, I thought I was over the crud. I can't hardly wait for Spring.

    December 29, 2013

    • Kim B

No problem at all. Feel better!

      December 29, 2013

  • Kim B

Weather is looking good. low 50s and showers ending by hike time. Most of the path is paved/gravel, so mud and footing won't be an issue except on the Boy Scout Trail. Regular athletic shoes or hikers would both be reasonable. Looking forward to seeing everyone and meeting some new faces. Take my number in case you need to reach me. [masked]

    • Steve G.

Are you still planning to do the Boy Scout Trail?

      December 29, 2013

    • Kim B

It will be optional. Maybe you two could take the group that doesnt want to. Thats what we did last time.

      December 29, 2013

  • Dawn

I'll be there. Searching for the waterproof pants as I type....

    December 29, 2013

    • Kim B

      Doubt you'll need them.

      1 · December 29, 2013

  • Kim B

Please update your rsvp if not attendjng so we don't wait for you. Plus we still have a few on the waiting list. Thank you!

    December 29, 2013

  • Stacy S

Sorry, have to cancel out--have come down with some crud & feel more awful the longer I'm upright today. Probably not the best for a hike, even an easy one.

    December 28, 2013

    • Kim B

Hope you feel better! Holler at me any time you want to walk here. :)

      December 28, 2013

  • kathy f

Still plan on coming - will cancel only if raining !

    December 28, 2013

  • Evan W.

Will bring dog on a leash if I get a spot

    1 · December 19, 2013

    • Evan W.

Will be rolling in from Athens but plan on attending

      December 27, 2013

  • Kim B

Please be sure and update your rsvp if you cannot attend the hike. There is a growing waiting list of people who would appreciate advance notice of a spot opening. Note, that if you are on the waiting list, the system will bump you up to YES status, and you will get an email notification if you have that option turned on in your personal settings. However, please check the site often over the weekend, as people will change their rsvp.

The weather forecast for Sunday is VERY rainy. This hike will be rain or shine, unless threatening weather develops. Otherwise, wear rain gear and/or bring an umbrella. This is a beautiful walk even in the rain.

    December 27, 2013

    • Kim B

Please plan to arrive EARLY so that we can start walking at 1:00. The park entrance can be tricky to spot if you're not familiar, and there are 2 entrances. Let me know if you need help with directions. Be sure to find the big parking lot across from the dog park (closer to the Hamill Rd entrance), where I will be standing in front of the small restroom building. There are 2 other larger buildings (one beige and one grey) in other parts of the park, but those are not the correct place to meet. Plan on 2-1/2 hours of walking.

      December 27, 2013

  • Betsy D.

Sorry, something came up and I now can't attend. Enjoy the hike! I'll be on the next one!
