Craven's House Hike on Lookout Mountain

  • Feb 2, 2014 · 10:00 AM

                           CRAVEN'S  HOUSE  HIKE

                             On Lookout Mountain

DATE:  Sunday February 2nd

TIME: 10am

MEETING LOCATION:  Craven's House

DIFFICULTY:  Moderate

TRIP LEADER:  Tim

PETS:  Friendly leashed pets are welcome

Meet up with Tim and the group at Cravens House.  You'll hike from Cravens house to Sunset Rock, then take a little time to relax, enjoy the view, and take some pictures.  After a short break, you'll head over to Point Point Park, and then back again.  The hike should be about 4 miles total.

History abounds in Chattanooga, and some of it right at the start of this hike.  Robert Cravens  built the first blast furnace in Chattanooga. His home, which is currently the only remaining Civil War era structure on the mountain, was used as a headquarters by both armies during the Civil War. During the Battle of Lookout Mountain, the house was almostnearly leveled, but Cravens rebuilt it in the style of the original in 1866.

A good hike today even if the weather didn't cooperate with clear skies. The views were not there due to the low clouds, but the trail did offer some obstacles. The low clouds did give a feeling of history because that's the kind of weather the Civil War soldiers experienced in the "Battle above the Clouds" back on Nov 23-25, 1863

      Another great hike. Thanks, Tim.

Great hike, Tim. Thanks for leading us today. It's a shame the fog obscured our view, but the challenges along the gorgeous trail made up for it. I especially appreciated having to work as a team to get across the ice on the trail and also the section where the fallen tree took out the trail completely. Thanks to those that worked together to get everyone across safely. However, it's still a shame how many last-minute cancels and no-shows there were today. I'm wondering if people understand the rsvp system at all and if it should be explained to new members when they join.

It's looking good for today, so far, according to the weather.com. 0% chance of rain until 1pm where it goes up to 50%, at least according to the zip code I live in. Bring some rain gear just in case. I'll be at the BiLo in St Elmo this morning and we'll leave there by 9:35am. I'll be in a Cayenne Red (maroon) Nissan Juke

I'll be there also in a red Nissan Exterra SUV. (Red Nissan day?) :)

Can anyone tell me from start to finish how long we will be? Have some work commitments I am jugging around. Thanks!

LIsa, I spoke to you on the phone yesterday, I believe we can be off the trail by 1pm or so. I'd like to be off before the rain starts

Yeah I've done the trail from craven s to point park a few times before, and the stairs. Haven't done sunset though.... May need to skip this one only because of the weather making the trail wet... hopefully we will plan another when it's drier!!

Hello everyone, the wait list is getting longer so if you can not make the hike on SUNDAY, please change your RSVP so that someone on the wait list will be able to go

Although I can't go due to work , just wanted to post that there are 2 lots to park in- one at cravens house and one just below it. Have fun!!

Ok I promise I didn't post half written comments on purpose & certainly not 10 of them!! What I was trying to say is that yes I'm concerned about ice & it being slick. This is not a hike I want to get left on but I am slower so am debating if I should attend. I have hired the point park trail several times before but the rains this past summer really altered the trail in some areas... anyone hiked those trails recently??

    January 30, 2014

    • Tim

Kim is correct, we will be hiking uphill for approximately a mile or so, to the Bluffs trail. From there, it's a relatively level (for Tennessee) trail until we get to the "stairs" leading up to Sunset Rock. These are step formed from the rock of the mountain and are not uniform. There is not a handrail on the way up. We will then head back down the steps, and on the Bluffs trail to the stairs of Point Park. We will take another rest and picture break, and possible walk the short loop around the park.

      January 30, 2014

    • Tim

The trail up is rocky in places with tree roots and what not along the way. Hope this helps!

Is anyone thinking of carpooling for this? I don't remember the parking lot having very many spots and no overflow area, but I could be mistaken.

    January 27, 2014

    • Tim

We can meet at the Bi Lo in St Elmo like we do for the Lula Lake hikes. That's about the only place I know of around there. Cravens House does have quite a bit of parking though and the Bi Lo would only be about 10 or 15 minutes from there

      January 27, 2014

    • Kim B

I thought the street sign leading to Craven's House was confusing (and I wasn't driving)! I wouldn't mind meeting at BiLo if anyone else is interested.

I am on list to hike but have a question about the pending rain for Sunday. Will hike go on as planned? Last I heard 70% rain.

    January 29, 2014

    • Tim

The chance of rain is down to 20% from the weather report I saw this evening. It never hurts to have some rain gear in the backpack just case

      January 29, 2014

The wait list was too long for me, so I've opted out this time. I'll try another time!

I just wanted to send a quick thank you to all that have signed up for the hike already even though it's still a month out. This will be a fun hike that will offer some challenge, along with three great overlooks, one at the trail head, another at Sunset Rock, and the last at Point Park. There will also be lots of scenery along the way and a sense of history also.
