                                   (Fort Oglethorpe)

    DATE:    Sunday April 27th

    TIME:     10am

    HIKE DISTANCE:   5 miles

    DIFFICULTY:   easy

MEETING LOCATION: Visitor's Center lower parking lot

    TRIP LEADER:   Wayne

PETS:   Dogs are welcome, but must remain on leash at ALL times

This is a 5 mile trail passing a series of 7 memorials throughout the battlefield.   This hike is for all skill levels, and would be a great hike for beginners looking to get started, or folks looking to get active again after winter.   The monuments along this trail are markers where Commanding Generals from both sides of the battle were mortally wounded on the battlefield.  As part of the hike, we will stop briefly at the monuments to briefly discuss some of the history associated with each of the Generals and their role in the overall Battle.  This will provide a chance to take a brief breather, while at the same time learn some history.

The terrain for this hike is relatively easy with a few small hills.  Dogs are permitted, but must remain on a leash and be controlled at all times.

Bring water and snacks/small lunch. We will take a brief break along the way.

From Interstate 75: At Exit 350 take Battlefield Parkway (Georgia 2) west to Fort Oglethorpe. Turn left at the intersection of Battlefield Parkway and Lafayette Road. Go one mile on Lafayette Road to the park entrance and visitor center.

From Interstate 24: At Exit 180 take U.S. Highway 27 south (Rossville Boulevard) to Fort Oglethorpe. At the intersection of Battlefield Parkway, continue straight through the intersection onto Lafayette Road to the park entrance one mile ahead.

PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY OR ON TIME

Unfortunately, this event may end up being cancelled. The trip leader had an emergency situation come up that will not allow him to be there this weekend. I am trying to find someone else that is familiar with the trail, but so far I have not been successful. If I do not find someone by tomorrow night, I will be cancelling the event. I don't want to wait until the last minute. This way, folks will have time to make other plans. If you know of anyone that already knows this trail, though, let me know.
