Virgin Falls -- Sparta, TN

Date: Saturday June 7th

Meeting Time: 9 AM EASTERN time

Hike Distance: 8 miles (with a couple of short off-shoots)

Hike Rating: Moderate with strenuous sections

Hike Pace: moderate

Estimated Hiking Time: 5 hours

Items to Bring: Hiking boots, plenty of water, and snacks/lunch

Trip Leader: Mendy Thomas

The group will meet up with the trip leader at the Walmart parking lot in Sparta since there is not a physical address for the trail head. A carpool location from Chattanooga to the Walmart in Sparta will be posted later tonight for those interested in riding together. The trip leader will then lead the group to the trail head from the Walmart in Sparta. This will also be a last chance to use the restroom or pick up any last minute quick items. Please be sure to arrive early or on time.

The natural area is named for Virgin Falls, which is formed by an underground stream that emerges from a cave, then drops over a 110-foot high cliff before disappearing into another cave at the bottom of the sink.

The trail passes by small rockhouses, boulder fields, sinks, caves, and waterfalls on route to Virgin Falls where the trail ends.

We will actually be hiking up to the top of the falls, and be able to view downwards as well.

Come on out and give it a try.

You will be so glad that you did.

Please come with:

a positive attitude

a smile

and ready to have some fun.

It's going to be a GREAT day ! ! !

You are going to love it ! ! !

Directions: From Hwy 111 in Sparta, Tn take Hwy 70 East toward Crossville. After about 11 miles, turn right (south) on Eastland Rd (a sign is at the intersection). At 6 miles on Eastland Rd, turn right on Scotts Gulf Rd (a sign is at the intersection). The trailhead is a couple of miles on the right. GPS Coordinates:[masked], [masked]

No-Shows: As with all Meetup's, please be polite -- if you are a YES RSVP, please show up. If you can't make it, change your YES to a NO as soon as possible. Please don't be a "no-show!"

WEATHER: As with all outdoor events, if it's raining/stormy or very poor trail conditions, we may have to cancel. If the weather is questionable, please check this event page before you leave home.

Meet at the Walmart in Soddy Daisy by 7:45. The group will need to leave promptly no later than 7:55 to meet the trip leader in Sparta on time. Park in the area closest to the gas station. This makes it easier for folks to find each other, and allows store customers the front spots. If you stand outside of your cars, it will make it easier for you to know who is from the group. Carpooling is great because it allows you to have someone to talk to while driving, allows you to get to know the other hikers, allows you to share in the cost of gas (rather than every hiker pay the full cost), and is better for the environment.

Let's go have an awesome time at the falls . . . .

Hi Everyone, The weather is calling for a partly cloudy morning starting at 70 degrees. Temps climb to low 80s by noon with a 30% chance of isolated showers thru the rest of the afternoon. I suggest bringing light rain gear or a poncho just in case. I will be in a small white car and will park in an open area to be easy to find. Please text or call me if you'll be arriving at Wal-mart in Sparta after 8:00 am central time. See you there!

Just to clarify - I will not be in Soddy Daisy. I'll be meeting the group in Sparta.

Happy to do it! If anyone needs to reach me call or text me at[masked] 0896. I'll be watching the weather closely to be sure it will be safe to go. This is a technical trail that is best done in dry weather.

The time change is really confusing and I am still getting used to it. If I am coming from Nashville, what time will I need to be there? 8am, right?

    June 1, 2014

    • Laura P.

      Yes, 8am central time. ☺

    Is this one dog friendly?

    May 24, 2014

    • Laura P.

Yes it is, as long as your dog is used to doing these kinds of hikes. This hike may be closer to 9 miles with the little side trips to see certain sights.

about an hour and 15 minutes... I will be posting a car pool to meet at the Walmart in Soddy Daisy at 7:45am so that the group can leave at 7:55. That should get the group meeting the trip leader right at 9am.
