Hike Distance:  5.4 miles

Difficulty:strenuous

Pace: Slow

 

Join State Naturalist Randy Hedgepath for a hike on the Cumberland Trail. We will explore the Big Possum Creek section to the overlook at Perkins Point. This is a 5.4 mile roundtrip and has 2 big climbs. It is rated strenuous but we will take it slow and look at all the nature along the way, especially on the uphills.

 

 

Carpool meets at the Walmart on Highway 153 at 9 AM.

 

We should be at the trailhead on Heiss Mountain Road near Jones Gap Road at 9:30 to 9:45.

 

Be sure to share in the gas expense with those that drive.

 

 

Be sure to bring a LUNCH and WATER.

You'll want to bring a camera as well.

Just a reminder that friendly leashed

dogs are more than welcome to join

the group.  Just be sure that your

pet stays on a leash at all times.

 

No-Shows: As with all Meetup's, please be polite -- if you are a YES RSVP, please show up. If you can't make it, please change your YES to a NO as soon as possible.  Please don't be a "no-show!"  As a group, we are fortunate that most of our members are very respectful in this way, and we thank you and appreciate you for that.

 

WEATHER: As with all outdoor events, if it's raining/stormy or very poor trail conditions, we may have to cancel. If the weather is questionable, please check this event page before you leave home.

 

Please make every effort to arrive early or on time

so that you do not hold up the group.

    I am changing the difficulty level of this trip. After walking the trail last week I found it to be more rugged and strenuous than I thought. It would be very streuous for beginners, strenuous for intermediate and moderate for avid hikers.
    It is very scenic and worth the effort but it is challenging.
