StumpJump Training Run

Let's meet up at the Suck Creek Road Crossing for the Cumberland Trail. (Assuming someone who knows the path up to Signal Mountain HS shows up), we will run to SMHS (the start of the StumpJump 50k) and back to our cars. Once there, we can refuel, fill up our water and head out again. If anyone wants to continue running with me, I plan to then run to the Indian Rockhouse and back. Because this is an out & back course, you can easily adapt this run to your training level and training schedule needs. The parking is on the side of the road as you drive up towards Prentice Cooper WMA. It is a small gravel lot for parallel parking 4-5 cars. (There is a brown staircase that comes down from the CT to Suck Creek Road at the parking lot before the trail crosses the road and continues across Suck Creek.)

Per Dreama's suggestion, and because I really don't want anyone's car to get broken into tomorrow, let's meet at the cumberland trail parking lot inside prentice cooper. I can't mark the gps location right now, because I am posting this from my tablet in bed, but it is easy to find. Just go a mile or two past the original meeting point (away from chattanooga) and turn left at the sign for prentice cooper wma. Turn ledt at the stop sign and then take the first left. About half a mile after your second left tirn, the paved foad will turnhard to the right. At the point, stay straight continuing onto the gravel road into the WMA (wildlife management area). Drive approximately 3 miles until you see a sign on the right side of the road marking the cumberland trail parking area. Let's meet there. The new location is about 10 minutes farther away from chattanooga, so plan accordingly. Sorry for the last minute change, but security is more important than convenience.

I don't suppose you guys would be willing to delay the start about 45 minutes? My wife works nights and I have kids. I had planned on dropping them off but she said no. I understand if you guys can't.

Unfortunately that won't work for me, let me know if any of you run this trail again. I would love to run with someone who knows the way from smhs to Suck Creek Road. Enjoy the run!

I will be back out there again to run these trails in a couple of weeks. Hopefully you can meet us for that one.

Careful not to leave any valuables in sight in your vehicles. Anyone I've ever known to park there ends up with a bashed out window and the thieves go on a shopping spree with credit cards. Apparently the people who break in these vehicles troll up and down the mtn. They have it down to a science too and are quick to bash and grab.

...Hmmm maybe we should revise our plans then. ...anyone want to meet up in prentice Cooper instead at the Cumberland trail parking lot? (its only about 10 minutes away from this spot and is a little more secluded, since security is a concern.)

I plan to be there. I am not familiar with the area, so may call or text in the AM if my GPS doesn't get me there. Will probably just do the first 10. Look forward to meeting and running with you guys!

I'm just curious for me details, such as distance and pace, etc. Also, I'm guessing the location given in this meetup is not the right map location?

The total distance (if you want to run from Suck Creek Road - the meeting point to SMHS and back (10 miles) and then from suck Creek Road to the Indian Rockhouse and back (10 miles) is 20 miles. That being said, you are more than welcome to run part of the way and turn around, stop at your car after the first leg to SMHS, or run the whole thing with me. (I have been wanting to run the StumpJump course for a while, and this seemed like a good weekend to do it. (We ran the River Gorge segment 2 weeks ago.) That said, you can adapt this run to be as short or as long as you want.

As far as pace goes, I typically maintain around 9:45-10:15 pace, but again there's nothing that says you have to run my pace. You are correct, the GPS coordinates are accurate, but the "Chattanooga, TN" part is wrong. when you click the link, it will take you to Google Maps. Once there, delete the Chattanooga, TN part from the search, and it will take you to the correct location.
