Surviving Legacy Code

After an extended summer break we are back with a hands-on coding session with Ian Russell, co-founder of CraftyCoders (, a principles-focused user group for the West Midlands .Net community.

Ian says: "Working with legacy code can be difficult. We feel afraid to change it but sometimes we have no choice. In this session, you will learn and practice techniques to help you manage the risk?

You can work in virtually any language, ideally as a pair, just bring along a laptop set up for your chosen language and a willingness to get involved! "

Thanks to IanR, and everyone else that came along last night, for a very interesting evening. It was fun to pick through the code and try to reshape it into something more manageable, (especially as I wasn't responsible for any of the original bad code for once).

Excellent, and the testing aspect is a subject which is rather close to my (professional) heart. Only looked at the Java codebase but it's fair to say I've actually seen code which looked like that (in fact worse), so it can't even be described as a contrived example.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
