Tonight's meetup with David Cullimore, Designer and Builder of "Jet" his the electric racing car was Fantastic. David is an Engineering Student and built the car independently in his garage. It's beating all the competition including teams from Jaguar Land-Rover and NASA which is phenomenal. We were all blown away by his focus on aerodynamics that created a really simple and unique, design. The car is made of plywood but is beating it's far more sophisticated carbon-fibre competitors.
We had a long discussion about the design after the talk. Davids main issue at the moment is cooling for the electric motor. As the motor is at the back of the aerofoil shaped car there is very little air pressure to get air in without disrupting the airflow. We talked about adding a fan to the end of the motor shaft that would pull air out. Problem is the motor turns anticlockwise so it may need to be custom built . Do any of the 3-D printer guys fancy helping out with this?
David has very little data on how the car is working under race conditions. There are a couple of temperature gauges but are hard to see whilst he is driving. He has been given an Arduino but has no idea how to use it to collect the data he needed such as Current, Temperatures etc? I know people are always looking for an interesting Arduino project does anyone fancy helping?
Lastly David is also looking for sponsorship to help develop the car further.
If you fancy helping David out please can you email him at email@example.com. I've uploaded some photos of the car to the meetup site http://www.meetup.com...
