Although music tastes differ we all know what it’s like to feel rhythm in music. In listening and playing everyone can both experience and create the magic of rhythm through the pulse of our untamed hands.
This group is for anyone from life long musicians to those who have never played a drum before.. . There is an inherent democracy in a drum circle that highlights some of the most beautiful aspects of human nature…. The desire to listen to each other, the search for ones own voice, the magic of creativity, and the cooperative spirit. When you place people in a room together drums in hand, with no rules, regardless of experience levels, people very soon begin harmonizing… both creating and experiencing music. It truly is an amazing uplifting experience for anyone who has never done it before. It is hard to explain with the English language… Music being a language all it’s own is something that has to be experienced to be believed.
The goal of this circle is the creative process itself. Simply pick up any percussive instrument sit down in a circle and see where it takes us. Allow yourself to float between beats and create new rhythm patterns in the process. In the highly structured society in which we live, an experience of sitting in a group and feeling free to be completely creative, while at the same time truly listening to each other is a rare experience, but it is one that has benefits far beyond the drum. It stimulates creative thinking and problem solving and I believe that training the ear to listen and harmonize inadvertently helps improve how we communicate with people in our lives in general. … We encourage all forms of experimentation. Singing, beatboxing, using any found materials as percussive instruments. I have Djembes but any instruments are welcome. The idea is to create an all immersive spontaneous creative experience so throw your ideas on the table. I only have one extra drum so please bring your own percussion instruments. Please keep in mind that in this indoor space we want to be able to all hear each other.
