Jug Bay Natural Area 8 Mile Hike

A big thank you goes out to Randy G. for planning and helping to host this hike. As she notes below there is a whole bunch of interesting stuff to see at Jug Bay that you can see from your kayak. Here's what Randy has t say about it

Jug Bay is not only a great place to paddle, the Natural Area also has over 8 miles of natural surface trails providing access to a variety of habitats from woodlands to wetlands to open fields. This hike will utilize parts of most of the trails, with an option for a shorter 5 mile hike. The level of difficulty is easy to moderate, there are only a few short sections of the trails that are a little steep. Part of the trail is on a boardwalk through the wetlands area. Pack a lunch or a snack. I hike at a leisurely pace, so everyone should be able to keep up without trouble.

Hikes are always fun with this group and this one was no exception. The snow and sleet showers just added a bit more interest to the adventure. It is a really interesting locale and I'd like to do it again in the spring when the flora and fauna are blooming and hatching! I know it's beautiful then from a kayak and I'd bet the hiking trails are too.

    Thanks Randy!

The weather was a little interesting, sleet flurries here and there, but I think everyone who came had fun. Thanks for turning out!

I pre-connoitered parts of the trails that are in low-lying areas and am happy to report they are in good shape, no standing water or big puddles. The boardwalks are in good condition as well. One addendum about dogs - the last part of the planned hike (about a mile) will be on the nature trail, which is the boardwalk through the marsh. Dogs are NOT allowed on the nature trail, so if you bring one, you will have to depart from the main group and take a different route back to the parking area. It was absolutely gorgeous out there today! Saw little fish and a turtle, they will probably be back under the mud tomorrow as the temps drop. See y'all in the morning!

Hi everyone, we are still on track for Saturday. I am going to Jug Bay tomorrow after work to check on the condition of the trails. I checked with the visitor center about the policy for dogs. They are allowed there but they must be on a leash. The trails are also used by equestrians and a dog running loose could spook a horse and cause an accident. So if you want to bring a furry companion, be sure you have a leash.

There is a nice "real" bathroom at the Visitor Center parking area if you need to make a pit stop before the hike. There will also be access to porta potties elsewhere, and then of course, there are always the bushes. . .
