Repeat National Cherry Blossom Festival Peak Bloom Paddle

By popular demand I've scheduled a repeat of this paddle on Sunday in an attempt to accommodate everyone who wants to attend.  If you RSVP'ed yes for the Saturday version of this paddle and can make it Sunday instead please change your RSVP accordingly.  Please note that the Sunday paddle will be on the water a half hour later at 10:30 AM

The National Park Service  has announced that the Peak Bloom for 2013 will occur between March 26th and March 30th.  It hasn't been as warm this spring as it was last year but I'm hoping they got the peak bloom right this time.  I think we should celebrate by paddling on the Potomac with an awesome view of the monuments and the cherry blossoms!

We'll be on the water promptly at 10:30 AM from the Columbia Island Marina boat ramp.  Study a map carefully before heading off to Columbia Island.  It is ONLY accessible from the south bound lanes of the George Wasington Parkway.  If you miss the turn off it will take at least 10 minutes to make the 2 U-turns necessary to have a second shot at it.  I'm not sure what the water temperature will be a month from now but I suspect that some sort of proper cold water paddling attire will be required.  I'll post the specifics a few days before the paddle.

We will paddle up stream against the current to Rossevelt Island where we will stop for snacks and a break and then depending on the tides take the back channel the the boat ramp.  We should be back to the take out no later than 3:00 PM with plenty of time to catch an early dinner at one of the local restaurants if anyone is interested.  Please feel free to offer restaurant suggestions in the area.

There are rental boats available for this paddle at the weekend price of $50.00 which includes the kayak, a paddle and a PFD delivered to and waiting for you at the put in.  I can't say for sure yet but especially in light of the colder spring this year, this will probably be a Proper Cold Water Attire Required paddle.  If you are renting or bringing your own boat you will need to provide your own wet suit or better to attend.

Hey there was at least one tree that was really starting to bloom today although it wasn't a Japanese Cherry. We did get lightly rained on for maybe a half hour but it was warm enough to not be a problem. After paddling two weekend days in a row for the first time this year, I'm starting to feel like a guy who runs a kayak group again. It was really great to paddle with you all yesterday and today. Thanks for coming everyone.

Very nice cruise on the Potomac. A bit of drizzle toward the end, but really not a bad day. Thanks Chuck!

Sorry to cancel, Chuck & gang, and I can't even plead illness, injury or a conflict. I just hate being cold AND wet, and Sunday's weather doesn't sound comfortable. So I'll see y'all in a few weeks when it's warmer!

    March 28, 2013

    • Chuck

No worries Lise. I hate being wet and cold too. It is why we don't paddle year round even if we do have the right clothing for it. My current interpretation of the forecast (from Friday morning's perspective) is that the chance of rain while we will be on the water is less than 10% but it is going to be windy in the 10-15 MPH range.

Thanks, Chuck - hey, you win some, you lose some. There's plenty of nice, warm days coming in a few weeks/months. I'll nibble my Peeps tomorrow and dream about sweltering on the Bay with you guys in June!

My boat is loaded on the car, all my gear is ready unless it is going to pour like heck, I WILL be there.

Thanks so much. Change in plans. Have fun!

    March 30, 2013

  • Chuck

Right now the weather is looking a little iffy in the rain department but I'm pretty sure we won't get poured on. I will get an email out to those attending later tonight but it might be late.

I have loaded the boat already. No turning back for me.

Sorry to cancel. Something came up and we won't be able to paddle.

Chuck with regards to the letter, i agree its rude to drop out at the last second, but its NCAA tournament time. If Duke wins friday night (Go DUKE of course-America's team ! STUDENT Athletes who graduate !) and the next game is Sunday during the paddle, i may have to cancel....mea culpa. Also, getting IN to thes epaddles has become SO competitive, the only strategy that works is to dign up if you even THINK you're interested, and then "fine tune " later. its the only way to compete against those who must watch the signups 24/7/365 :(

    • Marc

I might have to cancel also to attend to something a bit more urgent. For this date, there are still spots available. So I will monitor the event and give way if we end up with a waiting list and I'm still not sure.

NP Chuck. I NEEDS a good "talkin to" once in awhile....You know i got your back and would never take cancelling/signing up lightly. and its damn good that CKA spots are "coveted" . Maybe i can even get into your next photo shoot whilst scratching your back.....

When I gave up my Saturday the 30th paddle spot I didn't realize Sunday was Easter....catch you on the water next time.

    March 27, 2013

Getting over a cold so don't want to risk further

    March 27, 2013

  • Jonathan K.

I will probably be paddling over the following weekend so I don't want to hog a spot that someone else can use.

    March 27, 2013

  • Dawn M.

As much as I really want to go, I am not going to risk being in the rain since I am still getting over being sick. Enjoy the day and Happy Easter!

We trust in you, Chuck, to a greater extent than we trust the rarely-right-but-never-in-doubt meteorologists who advise us and other pretenders trying to foretell our future events. Your personal record is far better than theirs.

But… just for the record, the Washington Post reporters and their NPS informants recently (on March 15) moved their forecast for peak blooms back to between April 3 and 7 - with April 5 as the peak. In the unlikely event that they are right, it may give you the opportunity to have a 3rd and 4th paddle in honor of this year’s blooms.

I would like to be included in a weekday paddle. Also, are there available kayaks to rent or borrow? I am still shopping.

      March 27, 2013

    • Chuck

Hey Dottie - I will definitely be posting a weekday paddle once the peak bloom is actually occurring. It will probably be posted with only a few days notice though. And of course there will be rental boats available.

Just got in hot water for signing up on Easter Sunday..... not that it matters to me. But, looks like we are headed to brunch downtown; might be looking at you from the shore! Enjoy!
