Repeat National Cherry Blossom Festival Peak Bloom Paddle
By popular demand I've scheduled a repeat of this paddle on Sunday in an attempt to accommodate everyone who wants to attend. If you RSVP'ed yes for the Saturday version of this paddle and can make it Sunday instead please change your RSVP accordingly. Please note that the Sunday paddle will be on the water a half hour later at 10:30 AM
The National Park Service has announced that the Peak Bloom for 2013 will occur between March 26th and March 30th. It hasn't been as warm this spring as it was last year but I'm hoping they got the peak bloom right this time. I think we should celebrate by paddling on the Potomac with an awesome view of the monuments and the cherry blossoms!
We'll be on the water promptly at 10:30 AM from the Columbia Island Marina boat ramp. Study a map carefully before heading off to Columbia Island. It is ONLY accessible from the south bound lanes of the George Wasington Parkway. If you miss the turn off it will take at least 10 minutes to make the 2 U-turns necessary to have a second shot at it. I'm not sure what the water temperature will be a month from now but I suspect that some sort of proper cold water paddling attire will be required. I'll post the specifics a few days before the paddle.
We will paddle up stream against the current to Rossevelt Island where we will stop for snacks and a break and then depending on the tides take the back channel the the boat ramp. We should be back to the take out no later than 3:00 PM with plenty of time to catch an early dinner at one of the local restaurants if anyone is interested. Please feel free to offer restaurant suggestions in the area.
There are rental boats available for this paddle at the weekend price of $50.00 which includes the kayak, a paddle and a PFD delivered to and waiting for you at the put in. I can't say for sure yet but especially in light of the colder spring this year, this will probably be a Proper Cold Water Attire Required paddle. If you are renting or bringing your own boat you will need to provide your own wet suit or better to attend.
