Full Moon Paddle on the Upper Potomac from Shepherdstown, WV

Celebrate the Full Mead Moon with an 8-mile night paddle on the Potomac River from the Shepherdstown boat ramp to Snyder’s Landing and back. This tranquil section of the river is suitable for all skill levels, and offers spectacular views of the sunset and full moon. We will leave the Shepherdstown boat ramp at 7:00 PM and paddle upstream at a leisurely pace. We will take a break at Snyder’s Landing to admire the sunset before heading back downstream, with an anticipated return time of 11:30 PM. If we are lucky we might get to see a train cross the bridge upon our return. We recommend that participants bring snacks, beverage of choice, and multiple light sticks to attach to their kayak and PFD.

There are rental kayaks including a paddle and PFD available for this paddle at the weekend price of $50.00.  To Reserve one simply answer the rental questions when you RSVP.

Thanks for a fun evening, everyone! I enjoyed the conversations all the way up the river, and the Christmas light parade of boats back down under the moonlight. We put on a great show!

Amazing night: great location, great people, great weather, great paddle with illuminated boats, great lightning show with no rain, great full moon (close enough to full). I guess it was great. Thanks Chuck and Kimmie.

Finally a spot!!! I'm looking for camping opportunities tonight (1 adult with tent, no pets) if anyone has a 2 tent site they're offering to share. Thanks !

    July 20, 2013

    • John

George: I have a tent site at Greenbrier State PArk, about 12 miles away. They say its 24X24. My tent is small so if yours will fit within the area you are welcome to join me. I am not leaving for the site till at least 3PM or so.

    Zip Line Canopy Tour
    Saturday, 20 July

Some of us camping at Lookout Point this weekend talked about doing the zip line canopy tour at Harper’s Ferry while at Shepardstown for the
Full Moon Paddle or the Prepeat.

I called them and here’s the info:
    Cost: $99
    http://www.harpersferryzipline....

Exhilarating, fast, and fun, this 2 1/2 to 3 hour spectacular adventure offers nature lovers and thrill seekers alike, ages 4 and up, the unique opportunity to zip through the treetops on a network of cables and adventure skybridges suspended high above the forest floor, overlooking the Harpers Ferry water gap, Potomac River, rock cliffs, wildlife, trees and plants.

They will add us as a group for Saturday morning, if I call in all of the names at the same time. Groups of 4-8, can start as late as 10:40 AM or as early as 9:00 AM. We pay individually when we arrive.

Respond here and I’ll let them know how many to expect.

  • Robyn R.

Would love to get on this paddle, with a friend !

    June 17, 2013

  • Vicky

Want to bring a friend if I get up the list.

    June 4, 2013

  • Rob

    Vicky,
Unfortunately parking is at a premium and 2 groups are not feasible. Keep an eye out for Pick up Trips as Cindy and I often go out at night from Sheperdstown, full moon or not.

    May 22, 2013

  • Kathy L.

Parking at shepherd university is free on weekends, and their lot is just up the street from the put in. River riders has campsites about 15 minutes (drive, not paddle) downriver, and there is a Koa in harpers ferry, also about 15 minutes away. I have a spare room, Also about 15 minutes away. I think it's taken for the Friday paddle. And I have a sofa and plenty of room for tents.

    May 13, 2013

    • Chuck

I don't know Kathy .... I mean of Gregg can't stand on his own merits and needs someone to vouch for him .... Well I guess I would have to vouch for him :)

      1 · May 18, 2013

    • Vicky

Chuck, this seems to be a very popular paddle. If I were more experinced i would offer to take a second group on Sat with a slightly different start time to prevent a log jam.

      1 · May 22, 2013

  • Rick

Long shot to make it through the waitlist, but worth a shot!

    May 21, 2013

  • Laura G.

I think I'm going to stay home today.
Enjoy and see you tomorrow !

    May 18, 2013

  • Melanie

Any recommendations for camping in the area?

    April 4, 2013

    • Kathy L.

There is also a Koa in harpers ferry, about 15 minutes away

      May 13, 2013

    • Kathy L.

Oh, and river riders has campsites further down river, also about 15 min away.

    • Kathy L.

My friend and kayak buddy put that camera up!

      May 13, 2013

  • Rob

John not enough parking for 2 groups. The one group will be tight. There is also a couple of areas that need to be avoided depending on water levels. Only a couple of us are familiar with how to avoid them.

    April 5, 2013

    • Kathy L.

Plop unless water is high like it is now, from Shepherdstown to snyders landing and back doesn't even have any riffles. Those are downstream from Shepherdstown.

      May 13, 2013

    • Kathy L.

Plop? Where did that come from? Stupid iPad.

      May 13, 2013

Friday -- Cool -- Better Ck Parking !
    Ken

    April 5, 2013

    • Chuck

I think we'll be okay on parking Ken. I know some other groups make arrangements with the college to park in one of their lots near by. If you have insight on that I'd love to hear more about it. If all else fails we can always launch from the other side and I know how to do that one but perceive the S-town ramp to be a better option

      April 5, 2013

    • Kathy L.

Parking is free at the shepherd university lot by the put in on weekends. shouldn't be a problem. Let me know if you have questions, I live here.

      May 13, 2013

  • Chuck

Okay, I've gone through and moved a bunch of people who responded to my email from the Saturday version of the paddle to the Friday version. I tried to do it fairly based on your email and where you were on the list for Saturday. I probably made some mistakes but I also added 4 more spots to each paddle. I suspect that if you are in the first 10 on the wait list for either paddle there is a very good chance you'll make the attending list. Please if your plans change, remember to change your RSVP so someone else can attend.

    April 11, 2013

  • Louis S.

Is there a signup for Friday night? I'm confused.

    April 11, 2013

    • Chuck

It's there if you go looking but you can't sign up yet Lou. Give me til tomorrow morning to get everything done.

      April 11, 2013

  • Chuck

Just an idea here ... not saying it's going to happen but ... If we did a second version of this paddle on Friday night, how many people could make an on the water time of 7:00 out there. How much would on the water by 7:30 help?

    April 4, 2013

    • NANCY S.

      I can do Friday night... : )

      April 11, 2013

    • Toni

I could definitely switch to Friday ;)

      April 11, 2013

  • Chrissy

Pretty excited about this!! I just discovered night kayaking last summer and it is AMAZING!!

    April 10, 2013

  • Kathy L.

I'm on the wait list but the main site says 27 spots left ...
