Daytime Cherry Blossom Really Peak Bloom Paddle

  • Apr 8, 2013 · 11:00 AM
  • Potomac River - Columbia Island Marina Boat Ramp

Daytime National Cherry Blossom Festival Really Peak Bloom Paddle

COLD WATER ATTIRE IS REQUIRED FOR THIS PADDLE despite the forecasted 67 degree air temps under sunny skies with no chance of rain.  It's all about the water temp.

We had two great Cherry Blossom Paddles the last weekend in March without every really seeing a Japanese Cherry Blossom.  I promised those who could paddle during the day that we would try again during the day once the blossoms were at peak and I think Monday the 8th should work well.  I reserve the right to change to Tuesday if that would make a difference but I don't think it will be necessary.

We'll be on the water promptly at 11:00 AM from the Columbia Island Marina boat ramp.  Study a map carefully before heading off to Columbia Island.  Please arrive with plenty of time to have your boat and gear ready to go by then.

Columbia Island Marina is ONLY accessible from the south bound lanes of the George Wasington Parkway.  If you miss the turn off it will take at least 10 minutes to make the 2 U-turns necessary to have a second shot at it.  Most GPS devices don't work the best in the area and even people who go there often end up driving in circles on occasion.  Study a map carefully before you set out.

We will paddle up stream against the current to Rossevelt Island where we will stop for snacks and a break and then depending on the tides take the Boundary Channel back to the the boat ramp.  We should be back to the take out no later than 3:00 PM with plenty of time to catch an afternoon meal together if anyone is interested.  Please feel free to offer restaurant suggestions in the area.

There are a few rental boats available for this paddle at a price of $50.00 which includes the kayak, a paddle and a PFD delivered to and waiting for you at the put in.  To reserve a boat simply respond YES to the rental question when you RSVP and I'll get you information on payment options a few days before the paddle.  Please remember that this is still a Cold Water Attire Required paddle and you must have at least a wetsuit to attend

Wow what a beautiful day. It still wasn't quite "peak bloom" but as you'll see from the photos we weren't lacking for blossoms. Warm, sunny, blue skies, water temps rising and blossoms opening as we paddled with a simply, nice, intelligent, fun and friendly (SNIFF) group of people. Thanks for coming everyone.

Even though it may hit 80 degrees tomorrow the water is still at best going to be in the low 50's so it is imperative that we dress for the water temps Sonia. There is a lot more information in the discussion section under cold water topics that should help you understand how dangerous it is and why we have to keep doing it until the water warms up.

The buds have are in the puffy white stage today (4/4) which according to the National Park Service means Peak Bloom will occur between April 8th and 10th. I think we're right on schedule this time. The DC forecast for Monday is calling for a high of 78 degrees under partly sunny skies with a 10% chance of rain. Winds forecast at 11 MPH might provide a little challenge and there will probably be little chop on the water.
