Pre-peat Full Moon Paddle on the Upper Potomac from Shepherdstown, WV

A pre-peat is the opposite of a repeat which technically might be no peats but in this case due to the popularity of this paddle we are scheduling a second one on the day before the originally scheduled paddle.

RSVP's for this paddle will open in a few days after I've had the chance to move everyone over to Friday night that indicated they were willing to switch from Saturday night.

Celebrate the Full Mead Moon with an 8-mile night paddle on the Potomac River from the Shepherdstown boat ramp to Snyder’s Landing and back. This tranquil section of the river is suitable for all skill levels, and offers spectacular views of the sunset and full moon. We will leave the Shepherdstown boat ramp at 7:00 PM and paddle upstream at a leisurely pace. We will take a break at Snyder’s Landing to admire the sunset before heading back downstream, with an anticipated return time of 11:30 PM. If we are lucky we might get to see a train cross the bridge upon our return. We recommend that participants bring snacks, beverage of choice, and multiple light sticks to attach to their kayak and PFD.

There are rental kayaks including a paddle and PFD available for this paddle at the weekend price of $50.00.  To Reserve one simply answer the rental questions when you RSVP.

this moonlight paddle was superb, the water was totally quiet, the moon was out, the group was in a flow of silence and some quiet conversations, all our kayaks had some little source of light - in fact, I suspect we looked like the Venetian Gondoliers in the medieval after the candles had been blown out.

Long shot by any chance somebody found a big yellow ocean kayak along the road on the way home? My factory roof rack blew apart just across the Maryland line on rt 340. One of my boats was still attached but the big banana (my favorite boat and a birthday present from my son years ago) somehow just vanished! We turned around and drove the road twice that night and again during the day yesterday but no sign of my beloved banana.
BTW, beautiful night for a paddle!

Is anyone else finding Google maps won't take ya there?

on iPhone Meetup "directions" button offers both options to select google or apple maps. Apple works. it's just like a repeat on Weds getting to Big Branch. As, much as I love iPhone, Google has always been my go to navigator app. now Apple has voice guidance and actually funds places that G won't.

Anyway, hope this helps for anyone else who has both & G isn't getting it done

A colleague from Annapolis just sent me this link to a webcam in an osprey nest somewhere on the Eastern Shore. Since we are paddling past many osprey nests this summer, I thought I would share this site. It is much less dangerous than standing up on the kayak to peek in the nest. Right Chuck?

    • Chuck

I think everyone should stand up in their kayak to see into an osprey nest at least once. :)

Zip Line Canopy Tour -- Noon

We are confirmed for 6 (Yoshi, Becky, Rose, Bob Z, Larry and me) for Saturday. The time slot they gave us was 12:00 rather than the earlier 10:30. Wear closed-toe shoes that tie or otherwise fasten to your feet (no loafers) and no short-shorts since we will be wearing a full-body harness.

We are committed to pay for 6 people so if anyone wants to cancel, please find your own replacement or send money. :-)

    Zip Line Canopy Tour
    Saturday, 20 July

Some of us camping at Lookout Point this weekend talked about doing the zip line canopy tour at Harper’s Ferry while at Shepardstown for the
Full Moon Paddle or the Prepeat.

I called them and here’s the info:
    Cost: $99
    http://www.harpersferryzipline.com/listing/zipline

Exhilarating, fast, and fun, this 2 1/2 to 3 hour spectacular adventure offers nature lovers and thrill seekers alike, ages 4 and up, the unique opportunity to zip through the treetops on a network of cables and adventure skybridges suspended high above the forest floor, overlooking the Harpers Ferry water gap, Potomac River, rock cliffs, wildlife, trees and plants.

They will add us as a group for Saturday morning, if I call in all of the names at the same time. Groups of 4-8, can start as late as 10:40 AM or as early as 9:00 AM. We pay individually when we arrive.

Respond here and I’ll let them know how many to expect.

Rooms, restaurants and campsites will fill up fast.july is our theater festival and everything sells out early. But you can see a play while you're here!

    May 13, 2013

Repeating what I posted on the other paddle. Parking at shepherd university is free on weekend and the lot is just up the street from the put in. I have room for tents in my yard, about 15 min away. River riders and Koa have campsites, also about 15 min away, with water and electric hookups.

  • Sarah

will be looking for a low-rate place to stay for me and my 14 year-old daughter. Any suggestions?

    April 14, 2013

    • Kathy L.

Sarah, I live about 15 min from Shepherdstown and have a spare room you could use. There is a comfort inn in town, I think, but the Bavarian and clarion are probably pretty pricey. The trip is full but I may run into you guys while out with my local friends!
