Patuxent River Kayak Camper

(RSVP's for this event open Tuesday April 16th at 9:45 PM)

One of our members is internationally famous for the exacting detail she goes to when planning something like a kayak camping trip.  I don't know if she will be able to join us for this trip but she did agree to let me borrow one of her excellent plans for a kayak camping trip she led on the Patuxent River near Jug Bay a couple years ago.  Those of us who attended had a great time despite less than perfect weather.  One of the challenges of this trip is learning to pack all of your camping gear, clothing, food and water for two days in your kayak.  No one will ever equal Gayle when it comes to packing stuff in a kayak.

We will be on the water from Selby's Landing Boat Ramp at 6:30 PM on Friday, May 10, 2011 for a short one mile paddle to our camp site for Friday evening at White Oak Landing on Mataponi Creek.  If you can't make it by 6:30 there will be options to come slightly later Friday or on Saturday morning.

After arriving at White Oak, we set up camp, cook dinner and spend the evening gathered around the fire.  After breakfast Saturday morning we will hook up with anyone arriving Saturday and explore a little of Mataponi Creek before heading back out to the Patuxent.

.

To make things a little easier this year we will also spend Saturday night at White Oak Landing which should give us a number of options for hikes and paddles in the area.

After packing up on Sunday we will take our time heading back to Selby's Landing and exploring the numerous small creeks along the way.

There will be a small charge for this trip ($5-$10) to cover the cost of the camp sites.  You will be responsible for providing your own camping equipment, food and water.  The good news is that the camp sites does have a porta john.

Rental Kayaks are available for the 2.5 day trip at a rate of $90.00 including paddle and PFD.  You must provide your own camping gear, food and water.  To reserve a rental boat for this trip just answer the rental question(s) when you RSVP.

What a beautiful weekend! The storms made the experience more interesting and created such dramatic cloud formations- ideal for some great photo opportunities. Thanks again, Chuck & Kimmie for all the work putting this together. Truly, a memorable trip.

I am addicted after this first group trip. The welcoming and company was wonderful. Thanks! We certainly didn't run out of water. We even had enough to completely douse the fire. That fire was the one started by rubbing 2 sticks together.

The camping trips are always a hoot but I gotta tell you all that I especially enjoyed this one with all of you. The days were beautiful and the rain was kind enough to show up about the time we were getting in our tents. Thanks for coming everyone.

It was a beautiful day and evening. Rain chased us in to our tents around 11:30 PM but it only lasted for a half hour.

This will be my first trip on a kayak. I have the tent and etc. because I have experience backpacking. I will need a kayak and PFD. I want to learn more about kayak camping and spots to go.

    April 17, 2013

    • Chuck

Ed - your backpacking experience will serve you well. Trying to cram off of the gear in a kayak isn't much different than trying to get it all in a back pack. I don't think your size 12's will be a problem. You might want to consider a pair of sandals or water shoes/booties though. The sort of crazy thing is that even though we will have plenty of water to paddle in, it is brackish tidal water and we all need to bring enough drinking water to get us through the weekend. Filters won't help much.

I bought a wet suit and booties. Tested them out on the Shenandoah a few days ago. Need to investigate PFDs a little more. Also researching paddles.

We still have room to add a few more people to this trip. If you can pull it all together by Friday afternoon send me an email and I will add you. Also it is not necessary to attend for the entire weekend. If you can only come for one night that works too.

Good, I see the guitar duo for around the camp fire in the evening are signed up although one is just a plus one currently. :)

    April 16, 2013

    • Randy

I'll be packing a travel guitar and some harmonicas for this trip.

      May 4, 2013

    • Chuck

And we will all be grateful that she did afterwards. I really promise that I will get some details out about the paddle real soon everyone. :)

    Chuck ,
Do you usually have a campfire on Sat night? Should we pack supplies for that?

    April 23, 2013

    • Chuck

Personally I like big roaring fires both Friday and Saturday nights. The camp site is supposed to be stocked with wood but I have found it without any on a few occasions. My suggestion is that if you can bring some firewood do so. There is no such thing as too much wood. Unfortunately the only way to get it there is by kayak. It's a short trip by kayak to the camp site and at least a few of us will be doing it at leas a couple times on Friday afternoon and evening. Last year many of us traveled with out hatches and deck lines full of firewood. The trip is getting closer faster than I realized but I will be getting an email out to those attending sometime this week with more details.

Chuck, how about a Saturday paddle for the rest of us to meet out at Selby's and paddle by and disturb all the campers?

    April 18, 2013

    • Chuck

I think we could possible do something like that Stacey. Let me work on it. I would need to find a couple people to lead a second group. Any volunteers?

      April 19, 2013

    • Chuck

      Done and now posted.

We still have room for some kayak renters on this trip. If you have all the gear except the kayak please send me an email to be included.

A little confused. The headline date is may 10 but in the text you say we leave Selby landing May 4. Which is the real date. I'm in for either one. Sounds like fun

Sorry Mary, I was posting too much stuff today and getting dates confused. Friday, May 10th is the correct date.
