Potomac River DC Monuments Paddle

  • Jun 22, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • Potomac River - Columbia Island Marina Boat Ramp

Potomac River DC Monuments Paddle

RSVP's for this event open Sunday, June 2 at 9:00 PM.  The total attendance limit for this event is 30 people but 6 spots have been reserved for individuals renting kayaks.  Renters on the waiting list will receive priority and be moved to the attending list until all 30 spots are filled.

I can't add more spaces to the full moon paddle happening later on the same the day but we can still do an awesome paddle a little further down stream on the Potomac a little earlier in the day to give more people a chance to get out on the water this weekend.

We will be on the water at 10:00 AM from the Columbia Island Marina for a paddle upstream with a view of the Lincoln, Jefferson and Washington Monuments from the river.  Please plan to arrive with plenty of time to have your boat and gear ready to launch promptly at 10:00 AM.  We don't wait for late arrivals.

Virtually every time we paddle from Columbia Island some one misses the paddle because they can't find the place.  Usually that's because they drive right by it but it is ONLY ACCESSABLE from the south bound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.  If you miss it going south bound you end up having to do a convoluted series of U-turns to get back to it.  Most GPS devices simply don't work well in the area so print out and study a map before leaving home.

From Columbia Island we will cross the Potomac to paddle up the DC side past the Memorials and take a brief detour up Rock Creek where you can paddle into Lock and Dam #1 on the C&O Canal.  From there we will continue upstream past the rocky islands known as the Three Sisters and stop for snack/lunch along the river.  Pack a lunch or a snack and be sure to bring plenty to drink to stay hydrated.

I expect this paddle to be in the 7 to 8 mile range and we should be off the water sometime around 2:30ish

Rental boats are available for this paddle at the weekend rate of $50.oo which includes the boat, paddle and a PFD waiting for you at the put in.  To reserve a rental boat just answer the rental questions when you RSVP.

Terrific weather, paddle and people! Traveling back in the secluded peaceful waters surrounded by the geese and turtles to see LOCK 1 was truly amazing! Can't wait to do this paddle next spring with the Cherry blossoms Kimmie! Thank you Chuck, Kimmie & Deke for an awesome paddle and all your helpful advice.

Some monuments, a creek diversion, add a resue demo, lunch on the island, and a spirited return paddle dodging those patient boaters - fun times for all!

My car broke down tonight and I am in a rental Jetta. I will free up a spot since it is doubtful my repair will be completed until Monday. Enjoy the paddle!

The 1 GW Mem Pkwy "map link" shows Nat'l Airport (Google Maps). Is the "boat ramp" easily found at "Columbia Island Marina"?

I have kayaked a few times in the past, but not recently. Does this seem reasonable for a newer paddler?

Colleen - We try to make most of our paddles accessible to someone without a lot of experience but you still need to be able to keep up with a very moderate pace and keep the boat going relatively straight. You might want to try one of our "laid back Sunday paddles" for your first trip with us as they are usually a little shorter and easier as long as the wind isn't too strong.

Hey I love you too. I think it does work better in many ways except that I have to keep track now of four sign up dates and I don't want to miss out.

Just an idea for you and everyone else but how about setting up a reminder on your phone
