Jumpstart Your Sea Kayaking Skills

One of my original objectives when starting Chesapeake Kayak Adventures was to offer members high quality kayak instructional courses at very reasonable prices.  I’ve been searching high and low for the best way to do just that and have finally found it in the form of a kindred spirit by the name of Rick Wiebush.

Rick is from Catonsville and runs Cross Currents Sea Kayaking.  He is an American Canoe Association (ACA) Open Water Instructor and an Instructor Trainer (i.e. he trains people who want to be certified as ACA instructors).

Rick has been paddling for about 12 years and has been an instructor for six years.  He is known as having a pretty laid back, patient and humorous approach to teaching, and is very passionate about helping people ramp up their skills.  As part of his personal paddling development, Rick has participated in several expeditions to Baja including a month-long, 400 mile unsupported trip.  He also has been fortunate enough to have done paddling trips in the Exumas, Greenland, Wales, England, Australia and New Zealand.  He works mostly in Australia for his “real” job as a child welfare consultant.

Rick has put together a great three tiered program offering beginner, intermediate and advanced courses for Chesapeake Kayak Adventure members at extremely reasonable prices.  I will be along, helping Rick out on almost all of the classes in addition to taking instructor certification courses from Rick myself throughout the summer.

The Jumpstart Your Sea Kayaking Course is for those who have just started kayaking AND for those who haven’t done it but want to try it out.  The three hour introductory skills sessions are designed to give you the foundation skills that you need to make kayaking safe and fun.  We’ll cover proper technique for all the basic strokes including forward, stopping, reverse, turning and moving sideways.  We’ll also show you how to quickly get someone back in their boat should they happen to fall out.  The training will include discussions about different types of sea kayaks, the kind of safety equipment you should carry, what to wear and general safety issues.  This class will definitely help get you off on the right foot in developing effective and efficient kayaking skills.  No worries if you don’t have a boat, rentals will be available for an additional $20.00.

This listing is for Tuesday June 11th at Daniels Dam on the Patapsco River.  If that date doesn’t work for you, it will also be offered on May 14th and June 11th.  Look for the postings for those dates on the CKA calendar.  Also look for the Intermediate Skills Series which will be four evening classes each focusing on a different specific kayak skill.  There will also be the Master's Progression Series which is a package of four evenings and one Saturday for intermediate paddlers wanting to take it to the next level.

There is a 4 person minimum for the class to take place with a 12 person maximum.  The $45.00 course fee must be paid by debit or credit card at the time you sign up.  The courses will take place rain or shine except in the most inclement conditions.  If your plans change and you are unable to attend, credit will be given toward future course offerings.

Hey, all you guys were great! I have been so impressed with the people in the CKA classes - your full-on interest and desire to learn, how carefully you pay attention and ask good questions, your willingness to try new things and take constructive feedback and, not least, your friendliness and sense of humor. What a neat group!

Excellent. I had attended a kayaking function about 2 weeks ago and couldn't for the life of me figure out what I was doing wrong (Kayak kept going to the side) - it was quite apparent after the on land instructions exactly what I was doing wrong and it became more apparent to me once I got in the water - excellent job of explaining techniques - I would recommend to anyone even those who have been kayaking for awhile - just as a refresher.

Looks are very deceiving - but I was thoroughly enjoying myself. It always makes it so much more enjoyable when you learn the right way to do things.

Accurately named class ~ Jumpstart. Had all my questions answered and learned quite a bit. Now I know how to stop quickly and that there is a reverse gear on a kayak. It's fun paddling backwards. Thanks Chuck for organizing and your tips. Rick and J were great instructors. Will be on the water this evening practicing, ssee ya on the inner Harbor this weekend.

Thanks to Chuck, Rick and Jai for offering the evening of instruction. All 3 of you have the patience of saints. I really did find the instruction very helpful and now need to get out there and practice, practice, practice. Jai, I really did enjoy watching that roll.

Ron - the put in is pretty easy to find with one exception. At the final turn onto Daniels Road the street sign is overgrown with vegetation and totally unreadable. I keep trying to remember to bring something to cut it back with but never do. Study a map or turn when the GPS says to. The other thing you might want to consider is that the two major roads to get there are Route 29 and I-70. Both of them have a tendency to get pretty backed up around rush hour so allow a little extra time, 20 minutes, maybe a little more should do.

Hi Chuck, Really look forward to the class, thanks for putting this together. Is the put in spot easy to find, parking close by, any landmarks for directions? Thanks.

I forgot to add the rental question to the RSVP's when I posted all of the courses. If you need a rental boat for the course just make a comment below like Diana and Doreen did and I will have one there for you. I always send out a DETAILS email before everything we do explaining how to pay for the rental and other details that you need to know for the day.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
